ADD can be in an inattentive form

Tourette's Syndrome
a neurological disorder marked by spontaneous tics
both vocal and motor tics are apparent
vocal {swearing or repeating words} or nonverbal
like a snort, bark or similar noise
motor tics are sudden minor movements like throat
clearing, touching, or tongue protrusion
some may have complex motor tics like squatting,
deep knee bends, retracing steps, twirling or
simlimar nonpurposeful movements
motor tics are involuntary - occur spontaneously
and are not deliberate
Tourette's Syndrome
tend to be subdued when the student is sleeping
or in an activity
usually emerges in early to middle childhood
often around 7 to 8 years og age
stimulant for ADD {hyperactive disorder} can
sometimes unmask Tourette's Syndrome {latent}
may also have OC symptoms
may include compulsive behaviors like repetitive
hand washing or compulsive thoughs such as
repeated counting
genetic component
can also occur spontaneously

- may develop OC symptoms, engage in repetitive
hand washing, anxious about cleanliness, need

Differential Diagnosis
- TS has a pattern of vocal and motor tics plus OC
symptoms
- Anxious student - only has the OC symptoms
