CALCULATIONS IN DRILLING:
1. Cutting speed: Cutting speed is the
distance moved by the farthest point
on the circumference of the drill bit in
one minute.

Where, v = cutting speed, m/min,

d = diameter of the drill, mm
n = drill spindle speed, rpm.

2. Feed in drilling:
It is the distance moved by the drill into
the work piece for every revolution of the
drill spindle. It is expressed in mm.

3. Depth of cut: In drilling operation, the

depth of cut is equal to one half of the
drill bit diameter.
i.e.,
t = d/2

4. Machining time (T):

It is given by,
Where, T = machining time, min
L = total length of job, mm
= plate thickness + clearances
f = feed, mm/revolution.
N = spindle speed, rpm.

Problem 1. Determine the spindle speed

required to drill a MS plate of 15mm
thickness with a cutting speed of
20m/min. take drill diameter is 20mm.
Ans: N = 318 rpm.
Problem 2. Determine the machining time
necessary to drill a hole of diameter
25mm with a spindle speed of 350rpm.
The feed given is 0.2mm/revolution and
the total length of travel is 50mm.
Ans: T = 0.71min

Problem 3. It is required to drill 15mm

diameter 5 holes on a flange. The flange
thickness is 25mm, the cutting speed is
200rpm and the feed rate is 0.22mm/rev.
Determine the total machining time. Take
a clearance of 3mm on either side.
Neglect the change over time from hole
to the other.
Ans: T1 = 0.7min
T5 = 3.5min

Problem 4. A 12mm hole is to be drilled

through a 20mm thick plate. The cutting
speed is 12m/min and the feed rate is
0.12mm/rev. Estimate the machining
time. Take the total clearance as 5mm.
Ans: 0.66min
