MEANING
Malnutrition is general term that includes
many conditions, including undernutrition,
overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency
diseases (like vitamin A deficiency, iron
dificiency anaemia, iodine dificiency
disorders and scurvy).

PROTEIN-ENERGY
MALNUTRITION

Currenly the most important nutrional problem in


most countries in Asia, Latin America, the Near
East and Africa.
A major health and nutrition problem in India.
Failure to grow adequetly the first and most
important manifestation.
Result from comsuming too little food, esspecially
energy, and is frequently aggravated by infections.
Child may be sorter in length or high or lighter in
weight than expected for a child of his or her age,
or may be thinner than expected for high.

TYPE OF MALNUTRITION
1.

Undernutrition

Is deplation or energy (calories) resulting form


insufficent food intake over and extended
period of time.

In extreme cases undernutrition is called


Strarvision. While Famine is severe food
shortage of a whole community.

Specific Deficiency is the patological


state resulting form a dificiency of an
individual nutrient such as vitamin A
deficiency, iodine deficiency.

Overnutrition

Many tend think malnutrition only in


terms of hunger, however, overeating is
also a contributing factor.
Overnutrition is the pathological state
resulting from the consumption of
excessive quality of food over an
extended period time.
Overweight and obsity are very common
conditions in developed society and are
becoming more common in developing
societies and those in transition.

MANIFESTATIONS OF
UNDERNUTITION

Undernutrition result in the loss of body weight.


The loss of weight is manifestation of energy
depletion.
Malnutrition from any cause retads normal
growth. Malnourished children grow up with
worse health and lower educational
achievements.
Decrease in immunity increases the
susceptibility to infections such as T.B, which
add to the morbidity and mortality.
Malnutrition is also associated with lowered
vitality of the people leading to lowered
productivity and reduced life expectancy.

MANIFESTATIONS OF
OVERNUTRITION

In the more developed countries of the world,


overnutrition is encountered much more frequently
than under nutrition.
The health hazard from over nutrition are :
a. Obesity
b. Diabetes
c. Hypertansion
d. Cardiovascular diseases
e. Renal diseases
f. Disorders of liver and gall bladder

CONCLUSION

Undernutrition and malnutrition are


widespared problem of povery and
deprivation that affects millions of people,
perhaps the majority, in developing
countries.
The poor, the hungry and the malnourished
are unable to live a normal life, are less
likely to fulfill their potential as human
beings and cannot contributed fully to the
development of their own countries.

like vitamin E, ZINC, Iron, Magnesium, and
Potasium
2. The first factor is the insuffient provision
food of a particular region
The second factor is presence of chronic
diseases, especially disorders of the
metabolism or the absorption food
and the last factor is poverty. (ilman)
