Sources of energy

1) Describe the energy source.

(What is it? How does it work? )
Heat is created. (Coal burned to make fire)
Water turns to steam.(Fire boils the water and the
water steams up)
Steam turns the turbine.(The turbine moves the
generator and creates electricity)
Steam turns back
into water.

2) Is the energy source

considered renewable or
nonrenewable?

Non-renewable
Cause it is a fossil fuel

3) What is the history of the

energy source?
In the 1700s, the English found that coal could produce
a fuel that burned.
It was the need for energy to run new technologies
invented during the Industrial Revolution.

4) Where is the energy source

found?
Coal Mines
Over 100 countries
All continents except Antarctica
The largest reserves are reserved in
theUnited States,Russia,China, Australia
andIndia

5) How is the energy source

recovered?
Coal miners use giant machines to remove coal from
the ground.
They use two methods: surface or underground mining.
Modern mining methods allow us to easily reach most
of our coal.

6) How is the energy source stored

once it is recovered?
It not stored anywhere
It directly goes to the power plant to generate
electricity

7) How is the energy source used

today?
It is mainlyusedin power generation.
Cokingcoal- also known as metallurgicalcoal

It is also mainlyusedin steel production

8) Is the energy source efficient?

Yes if we use
it efficiently.

9) What are the advantages of the

energy source?
Coal energy is an affordable energy source because of the
coals stable price compared to other fuel sources
Coal is easy to burn
Coal produces high energy when burned
Coal energy is inexpensive
Coal is enough
Coal energy is a reliable energy source

10) What are the disadvantages of

the energy source?
Coal energy produces large amount of carbon dioxide
The burning of coal is not environmental friendly
because it produces harmful gas emissions such as
sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide that
causes pollution to the environment including acid rain
Coal is fast reducing because we consume too much of
it

11) What is the environmental impact of

the energy source?
The burning of coal is not environmental friendly
because it produces harmful gas emissions such as
sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide that
causes pollution to the environment including acid rain.

12) Are there any other interesting facts

about the energy source?
Coal is the worlds largest source of energy for the
production of electricity!
Coal has long been burned to create electricity and
heat. The use of coal is increasing every year, in 2006
the world consumed over 6,000,000,000,000 kilograms
of coal!
Nearly 70% of Chinas electricity comes from coal. In
total, coal produces around 40% of the worlds
electricity!
Different types of coal contain different amounts of
carbon. Lignite contains only around 60 to 75%, while
anthracite contains more than 92%!

13) What is the future of the energy

source?
Coal would get over as we are consuming it a lot
We would have to search for more energies
