Introduction
Six Sigmais a set of techniques, and tools for process
improvement. It was developed byMotorolain 1986.
Sir Bill Smith, the Father of six sigma introduce this
quality improvement Methodology to Motorola.

Definition
Definition
Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of
process outputs by identifying and removing the
causes of defects.
Six Sigma approach is a collection of managerial
and statistical concept and techniques that focuses
on reducing variation in processes and preventing
deficiencies in product.
In a process that has achieved six sigma capability,
the variation is small compared to the range of
specification limit.

A six sigma process is one in which 99.9999966%

of the products manufactured are statistically
expected to be free of defects (3.4 defects per
million).
Six Sigma is a very clever way of branding and
packaging many aspects of Total Quality Management
(TQM).
Manufacturing methods of six sigma are used in
Batch production, Job production & Mass production.

Methodologies
Six Sigma projects follow two project methodologies:
1. DMAIC
Itis used for projects aimed at improving an existing
business process. DEFINE MEASURE ANALYSE
IMPROVE - CONTROL
2. DMADV
It is used for projects aimed at creating new product or
process designs. DEFINE MEASURE ANALYSE DESIGN VERIFY

Implementation roles
oExecutive Leadership, includes the CEO and other
members of top management. They are responsible for
setting up a vision for Six Sigma implementation.
oChampions, take responsibility for Six Sigma
implementation across the organization in an
integrated
manner
oMaster Black
Belts, identified by champions, act as
in-house coaches on Six Sigma. They devote 100% of
their time to Six Sigma. They assist champions and
guide

responsibilities, operating under the guidance of Black

SIX SIGMA AT WIPRO

The demand in the Industry led Wipro to implement Six Sigma .
Wipro is the first Indian company to adopt Six Sigma.
one of the most mature Six Sigma programs in the industry
ensuring that 91% of the projects are completed on schedule,
mush above the industry average of 55%.
At Wipro, it means:
(i) Have products and services meet global benchmarks
(ii) Ensure robust processes within the organization
(iii) Consistently meet and exceed customer expectations
(iv) Make Quality a culture within.

(I) For developing new processes:

DSSS(Developing Six Sigma Software)
DSSP (Designing Six Sigma Process & Product)
DCAM (Design for Customer Satisfaction and Manufacturability
(II) For Improving Existing Processes
TQSS (Transactional Quality Using Six sigma
DMAIC Methodology -used for process improvement in Nontransactional process
(III) For Reengineering
CFPM (Cross Functional Process Mapping )

BENEFITS REAPED
software defects reduced by 50%
cycle time reduction (rework in software down from 12%
to 5%).
Waste elimination and increased productivity up to 35%.
