Thin Provisioning & Smart Tiers

April
2012 V03+1 Firmware Enhancement
Enhancements
Thin Provisioning (ThP)
Improved random write performance via an enhanced page allocation algorithm
Displays, with improved accuracy, the progress of ThP:

Pool Shrinking

Pool Rebalance

Zero Page Reclamation (ZPR)

ThP Pool Shrink & Rebalance progress is displayed per whole V-VOL and pool

Example A Pool hosting 100 V-VOLs displays 40% when processing is completed for 40

Zero Page Reclamation progress - is displayed per V-VOL page

Example A V-VOL with 1000 allocated pages displays 60% when the processing is completed for 600 pages

ThP and Smart Tiers

Mainframe FlashCopy Performance

April 2012 V03+1 Mainframe Firmware Enhancement
Faster Incremental FlashCopy (FC) has lower performance impact on
volume IO
The longest portion of the Establish command (set differential BMP) will now occur in the
background
Primary volume performance is impacted for much less time when creating an incremental FlashCopy

The Establish Command is divided into two phases

from Command accept, to DSB=08 response : making the relationship - foreground

Mainframe Extended Distance FICON

April 2012 V03+1 Mainframe Firmware Enhancement
Extended Distance FICON is a protocol enhancement introducing
persistent Information Units (IU)
Persistent IUs allow the host to increase the number of IUs to be in flight from the channel to the
storage control unit
Extended distance FICON also allows the channel to "remember" the last pacing update for use
on subsequent operations to help avoid degradation of performance at the start of each new
operation
Compatible with IBM Extended Distance FICON function
Transfer efficiency is improved by increasing the number of commands that are issued to read
the Record Set information and by hiding response delay in the case of long-distance
connection.

External Storage Enhancements

August 2012 V04a Firmware Enhancement
Connect previously unknown/unsupported storage devices to an XP as
External Storage
Allows the connection of new arrays as External Storage with reduced time/effort
Vendor and Product names are gathered from the SCSI standard Inquiry page

It is no longer be necessary to:

collect SCSI inquiry data from a host-based tool
install a profile file

External array must follow SPC-3 SCSI Inquiry standards

Identifier Type 2h(EUI-64-based) or 3h(NAA) must be supported at device identification page(page
0x83).

Faster sequential writes to External Storage through the ability to

restrict round-robin multi-path writes to a single external storage
port

Sequential write performance can be improved by recognizing a repetitive sequential write pattern via

Smart Tiers Drive Type Coexistence in a

August
Tier 2012 V04a Firmware Enhancement
Can prevent a pool full condition by adding a different drive
type to Smart Tiers
Either:
Add different drive types to Tier-3:
Example: if a SAS 7.2K RPM Tier3 pool is nearly full, SAS10K RPM or External Storage
could temporarily be added (mixed into) tier3 to avoid pool full

Or
Add a different RAID type to a single RAID type tier:
Example: if the RAID5 tier-2 was nearly full, you could temporarily add/mix RAID1
parity groups into tier-2 to avoid pool full

Note: Since single type tiers are recommended, the disparate drives should be
removed when possible, via pool shrinking

Smart Tiers Multiple External Storage

August
Tiers2012 V04a Firmware Enhancement
Increased flexibility when configuring Internal and External
Smart tiers
Now use external storage in more than just the lowest tier

Greater latitude in meeting performance goals

Assign the performance potential of the external storage

allows the XP P9500 firmware to make more informed decisions

Example - customer can create this configuration

Tier-1 = SSD
Tier-2 = External Storage SSD
Tier-3 = External Storage SATA
