MEANING
Infrastructure means all those services
and facilities necessary for an
economy to function such as energy
,banking, insurance, marketing,
transport ,& communication as well as
social overheads like education
,health,etc.

DEVELOPMENT
The develoment of agriculture, industry, & other
sectors depend on the availability of
infrastructure.
It lowers production cost.
It rises employment opportunity
It expands market,improves the quality of
people .
Advancement of countrys infrastructure will
accelarate development process of india.

1. Most of the state board (SEBs) are financially weak.
2. Theft of power and poor cost recovery are
responsible for increase in losses.
3. There is inadequate power supply .It adversely
affects agricultural and industial development.
. Measures to solve energy problem
1. Promoting more renewable sources of energy.
2. Implementing proper tariff rates and appropriate
pricing policy.
3. Encouraging private sector participation .
4. Removing legal barriers to expand power
generation capacity.
5. Reducing consumption of commercial sources of
energy.

In modern world,the means of
communication are very important .

1.Postage and telegraph


In India , postal services were started British
government since 1837.
Postal services carries and delivers mail,
money orders and parcels to all parts of India
and the world.
Various other services are offered by postal
department like post office savings bank ,epost to deliver e-mail , e-bill post ,booking
rail tickets, sale of gold through post office
etc.
Telegram is used to send urgent messages .

1. Telephone

. It is the quickest means of communication.


. The people who live far away can talk to one
another as if they are sitting face to face .
. In India public sector companies namely MTNL
,BSNL , VSNL provides their telephone Services
. Now ,many private companies are allowed to
provide telephone services like ISD &STD.
. However cellular phones are widely used now a
days.

2. Radio(broadcasting)
It is popularly known
as akashwani.
All India Radio(AIR) was established in 1935 as one of
the cheapest media of information and entertainment.
Through radio ,it is possible to contact thousands of
people.

3. Television
It is most impressive audio-visual
means of communication.
Tv uses moving pictures to convey the messages.
Through a satellite ,TV communication is done

4. Fax,pager,email
Fax machine helps to send a printed
message or picture to another machine
world wide using telephone lines.
Pager works on air signals which are
received by a small handset called pager .
E-mail uses computers connecting by
ordinary telephone line .It helps to send
messages to any part of the world
through computers.

5. Newspaper
Newspapers, magazines and books are
also good means of communication
It gives latest news about current
events , rates of commodities,advertisement
,employment ,news,etc.

6. Internet
It is world wide computer network .
It is the cheapest means of communication
One can send or receive e-mails and
surf the net in cyber cafes

The people of the country are called
human resources of a nation.
Social infrastructure is required to improve
the quality of human resources
It includes
1. Health services
2. Educaton services

HEALTH
SERVICES
It is an old saying
that

,health is wealth. It represents


a state of physical and
mental well-being .
The national health Policy of
2002 aimed at enhancing general
health standard of the people .
An increase in life expectancy ,more number of
doctors and hospitals, eradication of diseases
,decline in death rate ,greater care of female
population etc. helps to improve health.

Government of India introduced various programmes


like Universal Immunization programme , AIDS
control programme ,etc. to reduce the mortality rate .
The no. of medical colleges and health centres
increased so as to improve health standard .
Government of india introduces various health
policies like janani suraksha yojana (JSY) , Pradhan
Mantri Swasthya yojana (PMSSY), National Rural
Health Mission (NRHM) etc. to provide health
services.
However ,it has to be remembered that prevention is
better than cure. so, in addition to government
measures ,balanced diet ,sanitation, exercise etc.
also helps to raise the health status.

Education
Education forms the backbone for social and
economic development .
Education imparts knowledge & skills.
Educated population is an asset for a country.
The role of education is very important in
developing the status of women .
Skilled manpower can be provided through
technical and professional education and
therefore ,education has given priority in
economic planning in India .

Several other programmes like Operation


Blackboard, District Primary Education
Programme (DPEP),Midday meals ,Education
Guarantee Scheme etc. were to achieve the goal
Education For All.
