Performance Based Design
What?
What?
Evaluate the performance of building for a given earthquake level and determine the acceptable level of damage to the
structure considering its inelastic behavior for that particular earthquake level.

Why?
Why?

Design Earthquake causes nonlinear behavior.

Economical design due to considerations of material nonlinearity.
Design codes can prescribe criteria for building design but do not guarantee the performance, ex. Parapet.
Design codes cannot quantify the performance criteria (KPI) thus give less confidence compared to PBD.
Simple discussion between the stakeholders and design professionals for deciding performance criteria (KPI) based
on cost and importance of structure.
Study alternatives and deviate from code based design since performance can be achieved without code compliance
as well.
Check the effectiveness of retrofitting without concerns over making the existing building confirm the latest code
compliance.
It is not practical to retrofit the building with every code update.

Performance Based Design
Simplified
Simplified Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation Method
Method
Permitted for buildings that conform to one of the Model Building Types contained in Table 10-1, and all limitations in
that table with regard to building size and seismic zone

Systematic
Systematic Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation Method
Method

Systematic Rehabilitation may be applied to any building

1. An analysis procedure shall be selected (Section 2.4)
2. A preliminary rehabilitation scheme shall be developed (Section 2.5)
3. An analysis of the building, including rehabilitation measures, shall be performed, and the results of the
analysis shall be evaluated in accordance with the FEMA requirements of Chapters 2 through 9.

Irregularity

The ratio of the average shear DCR of any story to that of an adjacent
story in the same direction exceeds 125%

Diaphragm above the story under consideration is not flexible and, for a
given direction, the ratio of the critical element DCRs for primary elements
on one side of the center of resistance of a story, to those on the other
side of the center of resistance of the story, exceeds 1.5

Analysis for Dead Load, Wind Load, Dynamic Load,
and Column Shortening

A modal response spectrum analysis shall be performed for the structure using sufficient modes to capture 90% mass
participation. Second response spectrum analysis shall also be performed, considering only the first mode participation.
NDP shall be considered if the shear in any story resulting from first modal analysis exceeds 130% of the corresponding story
shear from second modal analysis.

Performance Based Design Pushover Analysis
Earthquake load is applied on the model in
an incremental basis.
When in any element, plastic moment
capacity is reached, plastic hinge is
introduced in the model now to account for
nonlinearity of the material.
As a result we obtain sequential formation of
plastic hinges
Helps evaluate the performance
characteristics through performance point
which is the intersection point of Capacity
curve and Demand curve
Performance point is the maximum inelastic
capacity of structure under given demand for
earthquake

Performance Based Design Performance Levels

Building Performance Levels are

obtained by combining Structural and
Nonstructural Performance Levels.
Each Building Performance Level is
designated a numeral representing
the Structural Performance Level
and a letter representing the
Nonstructural Performance Level
(e.g. 1-B, 3-C).

Performance Based Design Time History Data
PBD requires reliable data, i.e. Spectral Data from site (Site Specific Seismic Hazard Assessment)
Convert Time History Data to Response Spectrum Data or Excel Input
OR
Perform Time History Analysis: Displacements can be directly compared to the acceptance criteria for PBD (FEMA)

4. MIDAS Gens Solutions for Analysis

Performance Based Design Time History Data

Time history analysis shall be performed with no fewer than three data sets of ground motion time histories
For each data set, the 5%-damped site-specific spectrum of the scaled horizontal components shall be constructed.
The data sets shall be scaled such that the average value of the spectra does not fall below 1.4 times the spectrum
for the design earthquake for periods between 0.2T seconds and 1.5T seconds (where T is the fundamental period of
the building).
Where three time history data sets are used in the analysis of a structure, the maximum value of each response
parameter (e.g., force in a member, displacement at a specific level) shall be used to determine design acceptability.
Where seven or more time history data sets are employed, the average value of each response parameter shall be
permitted to determine design acceptability.
