PROGRESSION

Arithmetic Progression
A sequence of numbers in
which each differs from the
preceding one by a constant
quality.

EXAMPLES
a) 2,4,6,8,
b) 1,3,5,7,
c)10,15,20,

SOME REAL LIFE EXAMPLES

1. Arrangement of the petals in a
flower.

2. Chess is an example of AP because

when the horse moves it goes by
threes so it increase with a common
ratio.

3. Pyramids

4. Clock

GENERAL FORM OF AP
Let x1, x2, x3, , xn be an
Arithmetic Progression then
the nth term can be
calculated by,
a n= a m + n

nth TERM

nth term of an AP can be

calculated by the formula,
x1+(n-1)d
Where,
x1- first term of an AP
d -common difference
of an AP.

EXAMPLE
1) Find the nth term of the AP
5,10,15,20,?
nth term =x1+(n-1)d
Here,
x1=5
d=5
there for nth term= 5+(n-1)5
= 5+5n-5
= 5n

SUM OF THE nth TERM OF AN AP

Sum of the terms=

n/2[x1+xn]
where,
n- number of terms
x1- first term
xn- last term

EXAMPLE
1) Find the sum of the terms lies in
1 to 50?
X1=1
xn =50
n =50
sum of the terms=n/2[x1+xn]
= 50/2[50+1]
=1275
