23

Architecture Types
A Power Monitoring Expert system contains many components, but can
only be installed in one of two methods:
Standalone installation
Distributed Database installation (optional; based on specific requirements)

The difference between the two installation methods is based on where

the database engine, SQL Server, is installed.
A Distributed installation DOES NOT provide any performance gains over a
standalone installation.

> See the StruxureWare Power Monitoring Expert System Design Guide
(ref# 7EN42-0109-00) for more information
Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

24

Standalone vs. Distributed

The standalone architecture is the preferred and most common
installation method in use because it's cheaper and easier to deploy.
In some cases, however, the distributed architecture may be required
due to local IT policy:
May not install SQL Server with another application on the same server.
SQL Server redundancy requirements with SQL Clustering or other thirdparty tools.
Specific IT rules for database management (i.e. SQL jobs, back-ups,
security, etc.).

> See the StruxureWare Power Monitoring Expert System Design Guide
(ref# 7EN02-0330) for more information
Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

25

Standalone Architecture
The simplest type of Power Monitoring Expert architecture is called
"standalone", where one computer hosts:
Power Monitoring Expert software (configuration files, communication
services, Web client server, a connection to SQL Server databases, etc.).
Microsoft SQL Server to host historical databases for logged data.

26

Distributed Database Architecture

The other type of installation is called distributed:
Primary server hosts Power Monitoring Expert
Database server hosts SQL Server databases

Useful if SQL Server already exists on the network and is available for use
by Power Monitoring Expert.

Computer Roles
In a standalone architecture there is only one server:
the Standalone / Primary server.
In a distributed database architecture there are two servers:
the Primary server and Database server.

Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

Standalone / Primary Server

Every Power Monitoring Expert system has a minimum of one server.
In a standalone architecture it is called a

34

Device Communication
Power Monitoring Expert is used to communicate primarily with the
following devices:
Power and energy monitoring devices
Protection relays and trip units
PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers)
WAGES devices via PLC I/O

Devices have either an Ethernet port for direct connection, or a serial

port (typically RS-485).
Serial devices require an intermediate converter or gateway (i.e. EGX100,
ION7650, etc) to establish a network connection with Power Monitoring
Expert.

Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

35

Communication and Protocols

Power Monitoring Expert requires real-time and historical data from
devices in order to be a power monitoring system.
This is only possible if both the software and devices communicate
using the same protocol.
Example A protocol for a computer is like language to a person. Two people can only
understand each other if they speak the same language, like English.

Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

36

Supported Protocols
Power Monitoring Expert supports the following protocols to
communicate to devices:
Modbus TCP
Modbus RTU (via Ethernet gateway)
ION

Schneider Electric - EcoBusiness Division

37

Connect to Modbus Devices

Power Monitoring Expert can communicate with any Modbus device (RTU
or TCP). The user-defined device driver can include:
Read/write access for basic monitoring.
Historic logs generated from real-time data.

The Modbus Device Importer (MDI) is part of the Engineering client that
creates the files and software support necessary to communicate with
Modbus devices.

for System Integration
Power Monitoring Expert can connect and share data with other
systems or software, as either a server or client.
Power Monitoring Expert supports the following standards/technologies:
ODBC
OPC
PQDIF
XML

39

OPC DA 2.05a Server

The Power Monitoring Expert OPC Server uses the industry-standard
real-time data interface, OPC DA 2.05a.
By default, the OPC Server will publish basic power and energy
measurements from the power meters.
Additional configuration will allow an administrator to publish any realtime measurements from the system.
