PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST

PULMONARY FUNCTION
TEST
INTRODUCTION

Pulmonary function test or lung tests are

used to asses the functional status of
respiratory system. It act in both
physiological and pathological conditions
Lung function tests:
They are based on measurement of air
breatrh in and out

Significance:
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a group of
tests that measure how well your lungs work.
Pulmonary function tests are done to:
Diagnose certain types of lung disease, such
as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema
cause of shortness of breath
Check lung function before someone has
surgery
Assess the effect of medication
Measure progress in disease treatment

PFTs are usually safe for most people. The test may

cause you to have an asthma attack if you have
asthma. In very rare cases, PFTs may cause a
collapsed lung.
PFT can cause problems if pateint have:
eye surgery
chest surgery
recent abdominal surgery
severe respiratory infection
heart disease

Tests for lung function:

Static test
Dynamic test

Lung Function Tests

Lung function tests (also
called pulmonary function
tests)The tests determine
how much air your lungs
can hold, how quickly you
can move air in and out of
your lungs, and how well
your lungs put oxygen into
and remove carbon dioxide
from your blood. The tests
can diagnose
lung diseases, measure the
severity of lung problems

Static lung function:

This functional test is based on vol of air flow in
and out from the lungs. These tests do not
depend upon the rate of air flow
Statics test include static lung volume
Static lung capacity

DYNAMIC TEST:
Dynamic lung volumes (forced vital capacity,
forced expiratory volume in 05 second and in
10 second), static lung volumes (total lung
capacity, functional residual capacity, residual
volume), and ventilation-perfusion DYNAMIC
relationships (alveolar-arterial oxygen tension
difference, alveolar dead space.

SPIROMETERY TEST:
Spirometry is the most common of the lung
function tests. These tests look at how well
your lungs work. Spirometry shows how well you
breathe in and out. Breathing in and out can be
affected by lung diseases such as chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease

A spirometry test
measures lung function.
A patient takes a deep
breath and blows into a
tube as hard as possible,
explains Mayo Clinic. The
test is repeated at least
three times for
consistency.

A spirometry reading usually shows one of four

main patterns:
Normal.
An obstructive pattern.
A restrictive pattern.
A combined obstructive/restrictive pattern.

spirometry shows the

type, pattern and
severity of lung
disease, it does not
give an indication of
the long-term outlook
(prognosis) or of your
quality of life.
