PULMONARY FUNCTION
TEST
INTRODUCTION
Significance:
Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are a group of
tests that measure how well your lungs work.
Pulmonary function tests are done to:
Diagnose certain types of lung disease, such
as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema
cause of shortness of breath
Check lung function before someone has
surgery
Assess the effect of medication
Measure progress in disease treatment
DYNAMIC TEST:
Dynamic lung volumes (forced vital capacity,
forced expiratory volume in 05 second and in
10 second), static lung volumes (total lung
capacity, functional residual capacity, residual
volume), and ventilation-perfusion DYNAMIC
relationships (alveolar-arterial oxygen tension
difference, alveolar dead space.
SPIROMETERY TEST:
Spirometry is the most common of the lung
function tests. These tests look at how well
your lungs work. Spirometry shows how well you
breathe in and out. Breathing in and out can be
affected by lung diseases such as chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease
A spirometry test
measures lung function.
A patient takes a deep
breath and blows into a
tube as hard as possible,
explains Mayo Clinic. The
test is repeated at least
three times for
consistency.
