FOOD RESOURCES

Approximately 250,000500,000 children

in developing countries become blind
each year owing to VAD

Students will be able to understand the world food crisis

and impacts of traditional/modern agriculture

Recall the factors influencing world food production (S&T)

Differentiate traditional and modern agriculture
(S&T)
Infer fertilizer and pesticide related problems in modern
agriculture
(S&T)
Assess the causes and consequences of water logging and
salinity
(S&T)
Construct a mind map related to traditional and modern
agriculture

30,000 plant species with parts

people can eat

15 plants and 8 animals supply

90% of our food

Wheat, rice, and corn are half

the calories people eat

66% of people eat mainly rice,

wheat, and corn (grains)

The top third of the economic

chain eats primarily meat.

WORLD FOOD PROBLEMS

CAUSES

Population explosion cultivable land area decreases

Environmental degradation of net primary productivity

Globalization, Urbanization, Desertification

Consumption of more food sources

Wastage of food resources

Climatic changes

Overgrazing is when plants are consumed such

that the plant community does not quickly
recover To feed the livestock's.
Continued
overgrazing
compactsthesoil,stripsthe
ground bare, and leads to
erosion.
Carrying capacity of any
system is the maximum
population that can be
supported by it on a
sustainablebasis.

LAND DEGRADATION Organically poor, dry &

compacted soil, Loss of soil structure & soil fertility

SOIL EROSION Cover of vegetation is removed

LOSS OF USEFUL SPECIES Affects plants

population

& its regeneration capacity

1. TRADITIONAL AGRICULTURE Using small pots

Simple tools, natural water, organic fertilizer

Impacts
Deforestation
Soil

erosion
Depletion of nutrients
Shifting cultivation

Modern agriculture uses pesticides, herbicides,

fungicides, fertilizers and other harmful chemicals

to produce the food we eat.
The food produced from conventional agriculture is

harmful to human health because they contain

residues of chemicals and in-organic fertilizers.

2. MODERN AGRICULTURE & ITS IMPACTS

- It makes use of Hybrid seeds, High-tech equipments,
Fertilizers, Pesticides & Irrigation water.
- Its a Green Revolution, but also rises several problems.
(I) IMPACTS LEADING TO HIGH YIELDING VARIETIES
If any pathogen attack There will be total devastation of the crop.
(II) FERTILIZER RELATED PROBLEMS NPK Fertilizers
MICRONUTRIENT IMBALANCE Excess use of NPK fertilizers
NITRATE POLLUTION If >25 mg/L in H2O Blue baby syndrome

EUTROPHICATION Excess use of N, P fertilizer In water bodies

(III) PESTICIDE RELATED PROBLEMS DDT, S, Ar, Pb

CREATING SUPERPESTS Pests Immune to all pesticides
DEATH OF NON-TARGET ORGANISMS Broad spectrum poisons
BIOLOGICAL MAGNIFICATION Accumulation of non-biodegradables
in the food chain

Death of aquatic life caused by increased nitrate levels

in water
Nitrates can come from two sources
- Artificial fertilisers used by farmers
- Nitrates from animal waste ( faeces
and urine) or feed ( silage)

(IV) WATER LOGGING

Over irrigation of crop lands by farmers Water
logging
Pore spaces in the soil gets
drenched

Over irrigation of crop lands

Inadequate drainage
No air for respiration
Mechanical strength of soil decreases
Water table rises

(V) SALINITY
Accumulation of salts such as sodium chloride,
sodium sulphate, calcium chloride, magnesium
chloride etc. in the soil profile.
Cause: Excessive irrigation
Effects: Evapo-transpiration stops, Salt
build up in upper soil profile
Remedy:
Good quality water
supply for irrigation
Using perforated
drainage pipes to drain salt
