Wind load analysis for solid

slab roof

1 ROOF

The design of roof slab carried out based on the provision of EBCS

Wind load Analysis of solid slab roof

To consider the effect of wind on the building

The roof have different areas so it is divided

Solid Slab roof is analyzed using coefficient method

2 SOLID SLAB DESIGN

Slabs are horizontal structural elements which

the frame elements(Beam).

transfer service loads to

There are two types of slabs based on the load transferring mechanisms.

These are one way and two way slabs.

One-way slabs transmit their load in one

direction while two way slabs resist applied two directions.

These types of slabs are composed of rectangular panels supported at all

four edges by walls or beams stiff enough to be treated as un yielding

Design
of slabs is made using EBCS constants

Live loads are taken from EBCS according to the function of the room

The depth is approximated from deflection requirement

Having the ratio of sides of the slab coefficients of support and span moment
are taken from EBCS tab

Then moments are calculated using equation M= i*P*L

Where M=moment
P=uniformly distributed load
Lx=shorter length of the slab
i =coefficient taken from EBCS

5 LOAD TRANSFER AND FRAME ANALYSIS

The

loads from slab are transferred to

beams as shear. The shear is calculated
using the formula (EBCS-2, 1995).

16

cont

The transferred load is not uniform

over the total length so it must be
multiplied by 117/128 to distributed
load over the entire length of the
beam

After having loads on the beams the

analysis is made using SAP.

Loads to be assigned on SAP are Self

weight of beam, transferred load, Wall
load, Base shear coefficient.

6 BEAM DESIGN

Beam is a flexural structural membrane that resists

loads primarily by means of internal moments and shear.

Accordingly the beam can be singly reinforced, doubly reinforced T or L

section.

I) Single reinforcement
II) Doubly reinforced cross section

8 Foundation Design

Foundation is part of a structure which transfers the load

from superstructure to substructure

Stability of the structure is determined by the way in

which the load is transferred to the soil

Safety of the foundation is safety of the total structure

hence we need to design a footing which transfers the
load from superstructure to the soil safely

the load from the column is used to design the foundation

28

Cont

The choice of suitable type of footing depends on the depth at which the
bearing strata lies, the soil condition and the type of super structure.

In our project the soil bearing capacity is low ,causing overlap of adjacent
isolated footings

Based on this we have designed the footing as an combined footing

CONCLUSION
Primarily

what every engineer must give stresses during design of

structure is that, the structure must be:

Safe

Economical and

Durable.

Site exploration for the site is crucial for determination of the type of
foundation.
The foundation footing was made square footing because both axes have
similar probability of experiencing the biaxial moment.

Analysis and design of every element in a building needs careful

concentration, so prior to ETABS analysis the load up on the element in
addition to transferred load should be analyzed. Then with ETABS result
obtained safe and an economical design should be done.

RECOMMENDATION
We

think its better if the courses AutoCAD and

Etabs are held with more time given for practice

We

recommend that students should be taken to

some construction site before the project is
given for more visualization.
