Signaling Radio Bearer (SRB)

Provides the Control plane between the UE and the
RNC for signaling messages.
Setup with RRC Connection Establishment.

. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

Radio Bearer (RB)

Provides the User plane between the UE and the
RNC for user data transport.
Part of the Radio Access Bearer (RAB).
Each RAB is mapped onto one or more Radio
Bearers.
Each RB is mapped onto one Radio Link Control
(RLC) entity in the RNC. Every RLC entity
communicates with its peer entity in the UE via one
or more logical channels.

. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

10

Radio Link Control (RLC) Protocol

The RLC layer segments long messages.
Each RLC instance is configured by the RRC to
operate in either Transparent Mode (TM),
Unacknowledged Mode (UM) or Acknowledged
Mode (AM) depending on the service requirements.
The RLC layer offers services to the control plane
by Signaling Radio Bearers and to the user plane
by Radio Bearers.
Every RLC entity communicates with its peer entity
in the UE via one or more logical channels.

. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

11

Logical Channels
Provided by L2/MAC sub layer to higher layers
Defined by which type of information is transported
Control Channels

Broadcast Control Channel (BCCH, DL)

Paging Control Channel (PCCH, DL)
Common Control Channel (CCCH, DL & UL)
Dedicated Control Channel (DCCH, DL & UL)

Traffic Channels
Dedicated Traffic Channel (DTCH, DL & UL)
Common Traffic Channel (CTCH, DL)

. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

12

Medium Access Control (MAC)

The MAC layer maps the logical channels into transport channels.
There exists four MAC entities:

MAC-b handles the transport channel for the broadcast channel.

MAC-c/sh handles the transport channels for common channels

MAC-d handles all dedicated transport channels.

MAC-hs handles the HS-DSCH transport channels

. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

13

Transport Channels

Services provided by the physical layer (layer 1) to the MAC layer

Defined by how and with what characteristics the data is
transported
Common Transport Channels

Broadcast Channel (BCH) (DL)

Paging Channel (PCH) (DL)
Random Access Channel (RACH) (UL)
Forward Access Channel (FACH) (DL)
Downlink Shared Channel (DSCH) (DL)
Common Packet Channel (CPCH) (UL)
High Speed Downlink Shared Channel (DL)

Dedicated Transport Channels

Same channel used by several

users
No UE identification provided by
L1, in-band signaling of UE
identity

Dedicated Channel (DCH) (UL & DL)

For exclusive use of one user

UE inherently identified by the
physical channel
. WCDMA RAN Protocols and Procedures

14

Physical Channels
The final Layer 1 bit stream to be carried over the air
Multiple multiplexed coded transport channels (CCTrCH)
Layer 1 control information
Pilot bits
Transmit Power Control (TPC) commands and other
Feedback Information (FBI)
Transport Format Combination Indicator (TFCI)

Mapped to combination of
Carrier frequency
Codes (channelization/scrambling code pair)

Soft handover, the UE is connected to several RBSs at the same time.
Softer handover, the UE is connected to several cells belonging to the

Inter Frequency handover. The UE performs hard handover between
different frequencies within UTRAN.
Inter Radio Access Technology Handover (IRATHO), the UE performs
a hard handover to/from other Radio Access Technologies, i.e GSM

Inter Radio Access Technology Cell Change (IRATCC), the UE
performs a hard handover to/from other Radio Access Technologies,
i.e GSM/GPRS (PS).

67

Cell Setup Procedure

Initiated by a Cell Setup Request message sent from
the CRNC to the RBS.
When the cell is successfully configured CPICH, SCH, PCCPCH and BCH exist and their power levels are set
and the RBS sends a Cell Setup Response message
back to the CRNC.

Procedure

The procedure is initiated with a Common Transport Channel Setup

Request message to set up the common channels (transport and
physical channels) in the RBS.
S-CCPCH, FACH, PCH and PICH.
PRACH, RACH and AICH.
After successful procedure the RBS responds with a Common

Radio Link Addition Procedure

The Radio Link Addition procedure is used for establishing the

necessary resources in the RBS for one or more additional Radio
Links towards a UE when there is already a Node B communication
context for the UE in the RBS.

DL Power Control
Is used to balance the power of the radio link(s) in the
RBS.
If the Power Adjustment Type IE is set to common, the
RBS performs power balancing for all existing and future
radio links.
If the Power Adjustment Type IE is set to individual, the
ones specified in the message is power balanced.

Direct Transfer
The Direct Transfer procedure is used to transfer NAS
information between the CN and the RNC or vice versa.
This procedure uses connection oriented signaling.

Besides NAS-PDU for the NAS information, this message

also includes
SAPI for indicating the priority of the message. SAPI 0 for high
priority and SAPI 3 for low priority (SMS). Only used downlink.
LAI + RAC. Needed in connection with Routing Area Update. Only
used towards the PS domain.

In this specific case Direct Transfer is used for

Authentication Request and Response.
