LTC 2040: Art for

Children

We must be aware of our


surroundings and the bigger
picture such as nature and
how we affect it and it affects
us.

Lesson Overview
Students will observe the night sky
and make sketches of the moon at
least 2 weeks prior to the
assignment and have 2-10 sketches.
Students should recognize that the
moon is not always the same
size/shape and realize that moon
and sun sets and rises in generally
same place.

Lesson Overview
Students will also read Happy
Birthday, Moon and do picture walk
of the book.
Before reading, students will make
predictions based on the title and
some pictures.
After reading, students will retell story
including main events and key details.

Students will next create their art


projects using crayons and watercolors.

Visual Art: I want the students to know


how to draw the moon in different forms
and paint successfully.
Literacy: I want the students to be able to
make predictions about the book, Happy
Birthday, Moon, and be able to talk about
what is real in the book vs. what is not
realistic.
Science: I want the students to be able to
notice the moon, sun, stars and be able to
describe them and notice any patterns.

Key Concepts

Can you explain what some of the


different shapes of the moon are before or
after creating a visual?
Can you make predictions of what will
happen in the book based on the title and
some of the pictures?
Can you describe any of the things in the
sky such as the moon, sun, or stars?

Essential Questions

Visual Art: The students will be able to


create a night sky visual by using shapes
and appropriate painting skills.
Literacy: The students will be able to
make predictions on what will happen in
the book, Happy Birthday, Moon and be
able to retell main ideas in sequence from
the book.
Science: The students will be able to make
observations from the sky, describe them,
and notice patterns that can be predicted.

Lesson Objectives

Visual Art: Drawing the night sky


while trying to make the shapes of
the moon and stars as accurately as
possible and filling in all of the
space with color. Painting in a
dragging motion, not pushing.

Content Areas Integrated

Literacy: Inspired author: Frank Asch. We


will be doing a class read aloud, Happy
Birthday, Moon. We will be making
predictions based on the cover of the
book and the title. During the read aloud
we will discuss how factual the book is.
After reading the book, I will have the
kids retell the story to a partner to
remember the main ideas and key details.

Content Areas Integrated

Science: The students will learn about the


moon in regard to how it changes shapes
and that it is almost always visible unless
it is a new moon. Students will also meet
the science GLE by noticing the presence
of the sun, moon, and stars and that there
are some patterns. An example of this is
noticing that the sun and moon both rise
in one part of the sky and set in another
part.

Content Areas Integrated

To gain students attention, the


teacher will explain to them that
the shape of the moon is constantly
changing, yet the actual size of
moon never changes. The only
thing that changes is the part of the
moon that is visible.

Anticipatory Set

The teacher will examine students final


art project making sure that the moon is
presented in different shapes and that the
paint is clearly not done in a pushing
motion, but dragging instead. The teacher
will also make sure that students have
reasoning behind their projects for why
they chose to create their project the way
they did based on what they have learned
in this unit.
