Heavy Metal
Heavy metal has 2 meanings. First one describes all
metal music (we can say just 'metal') and the second
one means the most standard metal sub-genre. We will
focus on the second meaning now.
Heavy metal came into being in 1960s and 1970s in the
UK and the USA. It has its roots in progressive rock and
hard rock. The difference is that heavy metal is faster
and heavier. There are highly distorted guitars,
energetic percussion and very important thing are
guitar solos.
Black Metal
The name of this sub-genre comes from the second
album of British band Venom. At first 'black metal'
meant bands that had songs with satanistic lyrics. But
at the turn of 80s and 90s black metal became another
original metal sub-genre. Most popular bands come
from Scandinavia (Immortal, Bathory, Satyricon) and
that is where that genre was mostly developed.
Death Metal
This extreme subgenre of heavy metal music has
appeared in U.S.A in mid's 80'. It typically employs
heavily distorted and low-tuned guitars, played with
techniques such as palm muting and tremolo picking,
deep growling vocals and screams, aggressive, powerful
drumming featuring double kick technique
The lyrical themes of death metal may invoke to
violence, killing people, religion (sometimes Satanism),
occultism and more...
Power Metal

characteristics oftraditional metalwithspeed metal,
often withinsymphoniccontext.
It is characterized by a more uplifting sound, often
combined with the heaviness from styles such as doom
metalanddeath metal. Power metal bands usually have
anthem-like songs with fantasy-based subject matter
and strong choruses, thus creating a theatrical,
dramatic and emotionally "powerful" sound
N Metal
Doom Metal
Kind of extreme heavy metal style, that typically uses
slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "heavier"
sound than other metal genres. It apeared in U.S.A and
U.K in mid's 70'
Lyrics in doom metal play a key role. Often, they are
pessimistic and include themes such as: suffering,
depression, fear, grief, dread, death and anger.
Grunge

Also called hair metal or pop metal. It combines
elements of heavy metal with punk rock and pop
music, adding catchy lyrics and guitar riffs. It apeared
in U.S.A in early 80'.

makeup, like members of band called Kiss.
Lyrical themes often
