Absorption and Release of

Heat

Sir Isaac Newton

An English scientist, conducted an
experiment on light and found that
when the sunlight passes through a
prism, it REFRACTS and separates into
seven colors.

William Herschel

He called the seven

colors SPECTRUM.
He found out that the
red was the hottest
among the colors.

Max Plank
Discovered
the
relationship
between temperature and heat
radiation.
He proved that when an object
receives energy from the Sun, its
temperature will increase.

Heat Absorption and Heat

Release of Objects

When the light absorbs and accumulate heat

onto the Earth, it will cause higher temperature

Wearing white clothes

will make you feel
colder than wearing
dark clothes because
light colored objects
absorb less light that
the dark colored object.

Factors Affecting Absorption and

Release of Heat

How does the

object absorb
and release
object?

Color
Texture
Temperature
Surface Area

Color
A dark colored object is better at
absorption and radiating heat than a
white colored object.
so when you are under the heat of the
Sun do not wear dark colored shirt, but
wear light colored to keep you cool.

Texture
A rough and non-shiny
object is better at
absorbing and releasing
heat than a smooth and
shiny object.

Temperature
An object that has a lower temperature than the environment will
absorb heat faster.
An object that has a higher temperature will release heat faster.

Surface Area
An object with a larger surface
area will absorb and release heat
faster than an object with a
smaller surface area.
