Hari raya puasa is not just wearing

day calls for a complete devotion to
ALLAH. It marks the end of the fasting
month of ramadan . It is a time of
forgiveness within the muslim

History of the Festival

Hari Raya is a very important occasion that
is celebrated by Muslims all over the world.
It is also known as the festival that marks
the end of one month of fasting. The words
Hari Raya mean day of celebration. Many
mistake Hari Raya Puasa for the Muslim New
Year but it is not. What is Ramadan?
Ramadan is the name of the one-month
fasting period when Muslims fast for a period
of almost 12 hours. They fast from dawn till
sunset.

History of the Festival

.It is a known fact that during the period of fasting,
apart from eating and drinking Muslims are also
forbidden from smoking. Only the sick are excused
from fasting during this month. Muslims are
expected to avoid lying, breaking promise or
cheating during the month of Ramadan. The
primary purpose of fasting during Ramadan is to
remind all Muslims of self-control and submitting to
Allah, the holy one. Even young kids are taught to
fast when they are young

When was it introduced in

Singapore
Marking the end of the Islamic holy month
of Ramadan is the festival of Eid, known in
Singapore as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari
Raya Puasa. Ramadan is a period of sober
repentance for Muslims, with
approximately 30 daysof dawn-to-dusk
fasting. Adherents of the faith also devote
much of the month to worship, charitable
deeds and acts of compassion.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of
the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset
fasting during the entire
month of Ramadan. The day of Eid,
therefore, falls on the first day of the
month ofShawwal. The date for the start
of anylunar Hijrimonth varies based on
the observation of new moon by local
religious authorities, so the exact day of
celebration varies by locality.

for both men and women in Malaysia, are the
Baju Kurung Teluk Belanga and the Baju Kurung
Cekak Musang. But to differentiate between the
male and female attire, the male costume is
simply referred to as Baju Melayu while the
female costume is normally referred to as the
Baju Kurung.

Foods for Hari Raya

Puasa
On this day Muslims in Singapore have a
lavish spread of food on their dining
table. They would have specialties such
as beef rendang (a spicy dish of beef that
is like a dry curry), ketupat (rice cake
wrapped in coconut leaf) and lontong
(rice cake immersed in coconut gravy).

Preparation
THREE DAYS BEFORE THE END OF RAMADAN
Most Johoreans of my time opted for the ketupat
and lodeh which is quite similar to the lontong.
The daun ketupat (containers made of
youngcoconut leaves) would be prepared and
their numbers according to their anticipated
number of guests. Preparing these daun ketupat
is known among Malays as anyam and mostly
done by the womenfolk. They had better skill
compared to the menfolk. Those having no
knowledge in preparing the daun ketupat would
placed their orders from those with the skill.
