Hybrid Circuit Breaker A Case Study

Abstract

High Voltage Circuit Breaker (CB) is important electrical equipment.

Vacuum Circuit Breakers and SF6 Circuit Breakers are widely used.

The merits and demerits of Vacuum Circuit Breakers and SF6 Circuit
Breakers .

INTRODUCTION

Contrast between the Vacuum interrupter and SF6 interrupter.

A circuit breaker is an electrical switch designed to detect fault condition.

The arc needs to be extinguished, in order to retain the breaking capacity of

the circuit breakers.

In a vacuum interrupter, the electrical contacts are enclosed in a vacuum out

of which one is fixed and the other is movable.

COMPARISION BETWEEN SF6

AND VACCUUM CBS

Circuit breakers are used for providing protection against high voltage and
for medium voltage levels.

The operating energy requirements of SF6 CBs and vacuum CBs.

Values of high frequency transient currents in case of SF6 and vacuum CBs.

The labor cost and the material cost of both CBs.

NEED OF HYBRID CIRCUIT

BREAKER

The vacuum interrupters have the ability to recover the dielectric

strength.

Random dielectric breakdown across the open contacts of the CBs.

Make and break operations occurring in the circuit.

The hybrid circuit breaker has the following *advantages over SF6 and
vacuum CBs

*Advantages

The capability of switching short line faults at high voltage.

The size and the cost of the breaker.

An excellent capability to deal with the steep-rising transient recovery

voltage (TRV).

CURRENT INTERRUPTION IN
HYBRID MODE

Interruption Initially By Vacuum Interruption:

I.

In this case, current is first interrupted by the vacuum

interrupter.

II.

Mode of operation is observed at the highest current.

Interruption Simultaneously By Vacuum And Sf6 Interrupter:

I.

In this case, current is simultaneously interrupted by both

vacuum and SF6 interrupters

II.

Mode of operation is typically observed in conditions in which

current is less than maximum current

DESIGN OF HYBRID CIRCUIT

BREAKER

The coordination movements of the two interrupters in microseconds

The bus terminal of vacuum circuit breakers.

Receiving of system control signal.

Synchronized operation to operate the vacuum circuit breaker and SF6 circuit
breaker.

CONCLUSION

The initial peak of the transient recovery voltage.

SF6 interrupter and the vacuum interrupter helps each other.

The breaking capacity of the hybrid circuit breaker is more than the SF6
circuit breaker.
