MAT 674 ASSIGNMENT

4A
MATH LESSON PLAN
PROFESSOR POWELL
STEVEN BAMBAUER

LESSON
The lesson will incorporate a pre-grouping
knowledge check via a 20 question worksheet. This
knowledge check will act as a pre-assessment to
gauge students capability and understanding.
This lesson will focus on solving linear equations by
graphing, substitution, and elimination.
Following this worksheet, students will be placed in
groups to work on real-life examples and the
creation of their own equation

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION
Worksheet: The worksheet will be provided to each student at the
beginning of class. Based on my knowledge of the students ability, I
will have circled which questions each students are expected to
answer. Students can of course answer more than is requested if they
would like.
Students will be permitted to ask questions and the two ELL students
in the class will be allowed to discuss with each other. Math can be
challenging for students who do not speak English as their first
language because not every word translates.

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION PART 2

Grouping: Heterogeneous groups of all abilities
will be placed together to tackle the creation of
an equation and the presentation.
Groups will have at least one student in the
top third, one student in the middle third, and
one student in the bottom third. Differentiating
the groups by ability level will be beneficial to
all students giving top students the ability to
show their knowledge and lower level students
the ability to hear a new perspective
Each student in the group will be assigned a
different aspect of the presentation.

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION PART 3

Each member of the group will give a real life
example of how linear equations may be useful.
The group will select one of the equations and
will present to the class the following:
The real-life situation
The equation that is a result of the situation
The solution and how it can be used in daily life

Students who are gifted or advanced will be

given the opportunity to also present a way that
the equation can be changed to fit a different
situation

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION PART 4

Students who have difficulty presenting will
be allowed to bring a script to the front or
defer to other members of their group
All students will be provided challenge
questions in that nights homework that goes
beyond the levels provided in the worksheet
in class

ELL STUDENTS
ELL students will be allowed to complete
the worksheet with other ELL students so
they can talk through the terms together.
They will all be required to turn in their
own worksheet
They will have the same opportunity to
present the information so that the
students can get practice speaking in
English in front of a group.

TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS
During the worksheet exercise I will walk
around and observe my students. As we will
self-grade before splitting into groups,
students will be allowed to ask questions and
get answers
Students will also be allowed to ask questions
during the group activity. During the group
activity I will also walk around and observe
and give each group the same amount of time.
This will allow me to make adjustments to
groups, expectations, and materials as we
move through the different areas of the lesson.

POST ACTIVITY
After the presentations students will
be given and open period to ask
questions of me and other students.
Finally, after they have turned in their
presentation and been given a few
days to study they will be provided a
traditional pencil and paper exam to
see if they can make the equation on
their own

ASSESSMENT
As outlined in the prior slide students will
be given traditional assessments
These assessments will be created using a
backward method so that they incorporate
material throughout the section
The assessment may be differentiated for
certain students by providing them
additional time or no-time with the exam
Differentiation for ELL students could
include allowing them to have a translated
copy without the numbers on it the night
before so they could review the vocabulary
