ACLS

(ADVANCED CARDIOVASCULAR LIFE SUPPORT)

2015 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care

KEY POINTS
Basic life support (BLS)
Advanced cardiovascular life support
(ACLS)
Postcardiac arrest care

BLS
BLS is the foundation for saving lives after cardiac arrest

(OHCA and IHCA)

Fundamental aspects of adult BLS include :
Immediate recognition of sudden cardiac arrest
Activation of the emergency

response system
Early CPR
Rapid defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED)

BLS

BLS
Pulse Check
no more than 10 seconds
Ideally, the pulse check is performed simultaneously
with the check for no breathing or only gasping, to minimize delay in
detection of cardiac arrest and initiation of CPR
Early CPR
Begin chest compressions as quickly as possible after recognition of

cardiac arrest (C-A-B)

Early Defibrillation With an AED

Immediate Recognition Cardiac Arrest

If the patient is unresponsive

with abnormal or absent
breathing, it is reasonable for the
emergency dispatcher to
assume that the patient is in
cardiac arrest

High quality CPR

Rate of 100/min to 120/min

Depth of at least 2 inches

or 5 cm
Allow full chest wall recoil
Minimizing Interruptions
Compression to ventilation
ratio of 30:2
position hands for chest
compressions on the lower
half of the sternum in
adults

Ischemic chest discomfort
Acute heart failure
