The means of communicating news and information

to a large number of people is termed as mass
media.

Mass media is classified into two categories

1. Print media:- news paper, magazines, journals and
other printed
materials.
2. Electronic media:- radio, television, satellite
channels, internet,
cinema etc

Mass media plays a critical role in educating the

public; educational programmes exist on channels
such as PBS.
ADVANTAGES OF MASS MEDIA

It educates people

People get the latest news in a very short time

People get to bring out their hidden talents

Children's knowledge increases

Great in promoting mass consumer products

Serves as a good source of entertainment

Radio is convenient as people do get short news and

with a mobile phone one can access it.
DISADVANTAGES OF MASS MEDIA

It leads to individualism

Some media contents are not suitable for children.

Health problems.

It glamorize drugs and alcohol.

It can lead to personal injury.

It can lead to ruin of reputation

Internet as a form of media opens up possibilities of imposters,

fraud and hacking.

Media can be addictive, e.g. Some television programs and internet.

JOURNALS

A journal is a record that can be used to detail everything

from your feelings about a particular situation in your
social life.

A journal is a scholarly publication containing articles

written by researches, professors and other experts.

Journals focus on a specific discipline or field of study.

Unlike news papers and magazines, journals are intended
for an academic or technical audience, not general
readers.
PURPOSE OF JOURNALS IN EDUCATION

Provides regular feedback between you and the

instructors and helps to match expectations.

Platform for synthesis of knowledge and ideas.

Helps to elicit topics of interest, challenging topics that

need improvement etc.

Help develop critical thinking

Dictionary of important terms : clarify troublesome

concepts.

DISADVANTAGES OF JOURNALS IN EDUCATION

Uses of journals have two possible negatives :

The potential for the teacher to hurt students feelings with
criticism

REMEDY : Avoiding the hurt feelings is simple just dont criticize.

The loss of instructional time needed to teach course

material .

REMEDY : Instructional time can be conserved by simply limiting

journal writing five or ten minutes a period.
