Problem statement
Failure of machine components is
due to loss of strength.
Failure depends on load, working
environment( corrosion), type of
material, wear and geometry also.
Failure phenomenon can be
reduced by using resistant
( corrosion and wear) materials.
Coating on materials can improve
the performance.
Objectives

Proper selection of Substrate and electrolytic

solution.
Study the ceramic coating growth mechanisms
in MAO processing
Tribological performance of the coatings
formed under optimum conditions of coating
growth.
The effect of electrical parameters including
applied frequency, duty cycle, and current
density on the formation, growth behaviour
and properties of MAO coatings on Mg alloy.
ABSTRACT
Magnesium alloys are being considered as potential
materials to enhance fuel efficiency in the aircraft and
automotive industries because of the light weight.
However, the major limitation of Mg is its high corrosion
rate, which needs to be controlled to avoid the failure of
the components. Therefore, the present, key challenge
lies in controlling Mg corrosion rate.
The micro arc oxidation (MAO), a fairly recent and eco-
friendly coating process, emerged as a novel means to
provide an adherent, hard, wear-resistant and corrosion-
resistant coatings on Mg alloys.
In the present work an attempt has to be made to
develop corrosion and wear resistant coatings on
magnesium alloys by using micro arc oxidation process.
The corrosion tests are to be performed by using
corrosion testing methods to know the rate of corrosion.
Wear tests are to be performed by using a Pin-Disc wear
test.
