What is Alkene???
Observe!!!
Alkane Alkene

Propane Propene

What are you found?

Alkene is
Alkenes are molecules containing a C=C double
bond.
General formula of alkene is CnH2n
Sometimes referred as unsaturated compounds.
Because the C atoms in a C=C double bond dont have
as many hydrogens bonded to them as an alkane does.

In daily life:
Goals
Students able to analyzed alkenes compound
properly based on the understanding of the
peculiarities of carbon atoms and the
classification of its compounds.
Student able to give and provide alkene
compounds properly according to IUPAC rules.
Nomenclature of Alkenes
IUPAC rule of naming Alkenes
1. Theenesuffix (ending) indicates an alkene.

2. The longest chain chosen for the root name must

includeboth carbon atoms of the double bond.

3. The root chain must be numberedfrom the end nearest a

double bond carbon atom. If the double bond is in the center
of the chain, the nearest substituent rule is used to
determine the end where numbering starts.

4. The smaller of the two numbers designating the carbon

atoms of the double bond is used as the double bond
locator. If more than one double bond is present the
compound is named as a diene, triene or equivalent prefix
indicating the number of double bonds, and each double
bond is assigned a locator number.
Steps of Naming Alkenes Based on

IUPAC rule
Step 1: Find the longest continuous chain of carbons containing double bond
Step 2: Giving number of main chain, begin numbering at nearer the multiple
bond
Step 3: Giving the name of main chain with the names of alkanes end with
ene
Step 4:Determine the branch (alkyl group)
Step 5: Give the name of branch with the names of alkyl group
Step 6: Give the full name with arrangement:
Number of branch name branch number of double bond the name of main
chain (in Alphabet order)

Note: If there is more than one multiple bond or more than one same branch
use numerical prefixes(di-, tri- , etc) for beginning of the name branch or main
chain
Step 1: Find the longest continuous chain of carbons containing
double bond

Step 2: Giving number of main chain, begin numbering at

nearer the multiple bond
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

7 6 5 4 3 2 1

Which is the right

number arrangement ?????
Step 3: Giving the name of main chain with the names of alkanes
end with -ene

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

heptene

Step 4:Determine the branch (alky group)

1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Step 5: Give the name of branch with the names of alkyl group
1 2 3 4 5 6 7

4-methyl

Step 6: Give the full name with arrangement:

Number of branch name branch number of double bond the
name of main chain (in Alphabet order)

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

4-methyl-2 heptene

Note: If there is more than one multiple bond or more than one same
branch use numerical prefixes(di-, tri- , etc) for beginning of the name
branch or main chain
Lets we try to practice to name the
alkene compounds based IUPAC step
by step?
EXERCISE 1
specify the name of this compound alkenes ?
Step 1 ?

Find the longest continuous chain of carbons

containing double bond
Step 2 ?
Giving number of main chain, begin
numbering at nearer the multiple bond
Step 3 ?
Giving the name of main chain with
the names of alkanes end with -ene

3-hexane
Step 4 ?
Determine the branch (alky group)
Step 5 ?
Give the name of branch with the names of
alkyl group

2,4,5 trimethyl
Step 6 ?
Give the full name with arrangement

2,4,5 trimethyl-2-hexane
Good job !
Now we know
how to write
the name of
alkene
compound
based on iupac
step by step !
