ABSTRACT
According to ICOLD5, there are about 60,000 dams
worldwide. It is probable that somewhere 10 and 30%
have spillway gates. According to Wikipedia6, dam
failures since 1960 have resulted in more than 150,000
deaths. Two major failures were at Banquio in China that
failed because the spillway was seriously undersized
and at Machhu 2 Dam in India where the spillway was
undersized and three of the 18 gates are not open.
The failure of spillway gates is a significant contributor
to dam failures worldwide. There is an urgent need to
improve gate safety bearing in mind that the dam and
its spillway gates must continue to operate safely for
hundreds of years .
INTRODUCTION
A spillway is the over flowing portion of a
dam, over which surplus discharge flows from the
reservoir to the down stream . Therefore it is
called as a surplusing work work , designed to
carry this flood water not required to be stored in
the reservoir ,safely to the down stream side of
the dam.
The spillway gates are the structural members
which are used to control the flow discharge of a
dam .These gates are facilitating a dam to store
additional water during low water inflow & to
remove excess water in case of floods.
TYPES OF SPILLWAY GATES
Flash boards,Stop logs and needles.
Radial gates.
Drum gates.
Vertical lift gates.
Bear trap gates.
Rolling gates.
MAJOR EFFECTS ON SPILLWAY

Effects of repeated loading.
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ON
GATES
Corrosion
Disintegration of gate materials.
corrosion is the major problem in
any metallic structures. It is an
important parameter in structural
evolutions because it can seriously
weaken a structure or impair its
operation. Corrosion has in fact
caused notable catastrophic failures
in bridges.
TYPES OF CORROSION
a. General atmospheric corrosion.
b. Localized corrosion.
(1) Crevice corrosion.
(2) Pitting corrosion.
(3) Galvanic corrosion.
(4) Stray-current corrosion.
(5) Filiform corrosion.
c. Mechanically assisted corrosion.
(1) Erosion corrosion.
(2) Cavitation corrosion.
(3) Fretting corrosion
REPEATED LOADING ON GATES
Since all spillway gates must be translated
or rotated to release water . During the
operation of gates there are loads on the
structural systems that are variable and
repeated in nature.
The most common source of these loads are
