BIOGAS PRODUCTION
USING BIODEGRADABLE WASTE

PRESENT SCENARIO
AT BHANDEWADI
DUMPING YARD
The daily garbage
collection in the city is
around 1000-1100
tonne. Out of which
NMC will segregate
800 tonne
biodegradable waste
daily.
According to TOI, NMC
has a plan to recycle 6
Our data and Survey

Waste foodstuff after wedding reception at BHASKAR SABAGRUHA.

According to data collected by our team, in the wedding function
attended by 1000 people, the waste of about 200 kgs (20 carret)
was generated. Annually in single lawn approximately 150
functions.
OUR NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION
PARTICULARS DATA

Number of lawns 150

Number of functions 100

occurring annually in a
lawn
Total number of 15000

SOLUTION FOR MANAGEMENT OF
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE

It can be concluded from the analysis that nearly

1 to 1.5 LPG cylinders can be saved per day.
The technology is highly advantageous for an
individual, commercial establishment such
restaurant, hotels.
Biogas technology has accelerated the BIO-
METHANATION process which has reduced the
time taken for the bio degradation of the
biomass.
Methane has high calorific value and is also very
lethal as green house gas.

WE TOOK A WATER CAN OF 20 LITRE CAPACITY AND MADE 3 HOLES
IN IT AND PAINTED IT BACK. FOR THE COLLECTION OF GAS WE FITTED
THE BALLOON AND THE CONTAINER WAS SEALED COMPLETELY SO
THAT NO ATMOSPHERIC COULD ENTER AND THE PRODUCED CAN
CANT ESCAPE OUT OF THE CONTAINER. RAW MATERIAL USED WAS
PROCESSED FOOD.
THE CATALYST USED WAS METHANOGENIC BACTERIA STAINS OR COW
DUNG CAN BE USED.
PROCEDURE
THE PROCESSED FOOD WAS FIRSTLY GRINDED INTO FINE PARTICLES
AND MESHED TO FORM FREE FLOWING SLURRY. THIS SLURRY WAS
ADDED INTO CONTAINER THROUGH THE INLET PIPE AND ADDED
STRAINS OF METHONOGENIC BACTERIA AND THE DIGESTOR WAS
KEPT FOR 5 DAYS .
WE OBSERVED THAT THE BALLOON WHICH WAS FITTED AT THE
OUTLET OF DIGESTOR GOT INFLATED. WE TESTED THE GAS BY
APPLYING IGNITION BY MATCHSTICK AND WE OBSERVED THAT THE
GAS BURNT BY GIVING BLUE FLAME. HENCE WE CONCLUDED THE
GAS HAS SOME CALORIFIC VALUE AND CAN BE USED AS FUEL.
EQUIPMENT
DESIGN
We took a water can of 20
litre capacity and made 3
holes in it and painted it back.
For the collection of gas we
fitted the balloon and the
container was sealed
completely so that no
atmospheric could enter and
the produced gas cant escape
out of the container.
Raw material used was
processed food.
The catalyst used was
PROCEDURE
1. The processed food was firstly grinded
into fine particles and meshed to form
free flowing slurry.
2. This slurry was added into container
through the inlet pipe and added
strains of methonogenic bacteria
and the digestor was kept for 5 days .
3. We observed that the balloon which
was fitted at the outlet of digestor got
inflated.
4. We tested the gas by applying ignition
by matchstick and we observed that
the gas burnt by giving blue flame.
5. Hence we concluded the gas has some
calorific value and can be used as fuel.
Numerical Data and
Analysis

Total Waste generated from Lawns in Nagpur-

30,00,000 kg Annually
According to our data 500 kg of waste produces
32 kg of Methane gas
Therefore total gas could be produced per annum
is 1,92,000 kg.
Hence, 10,105 cylinders can be produced.
(1 cylinder= 19 kg gas)
Cost of 1 commercial cylinder is 1500 INR
Therefore 15157500 INR can produced from that
waste in Nagpur city annually.
Conclusion
By this project we can produced 1-1.5
cylinders per day in Nagpur with the
waste of 500 kg
The waste of an individual could be
raw material for some other.
If this project is implemented on a
large scale the future energy crisis can
be minimized.
