Molybdenum is a component of xanthine
oxidase, aldehyde oxidase & sulfite
oxidase.
Sources:
Rich sources of molybdenum are liver,
kidney, meat, milk, whole grains, legumes
and leafy vegetables.
RDA:
200 micrograms/day.
Absorption:
Dietary molybdenum is readily absorbed by
the intestine and is excreted in urine and bile.
Functions:
Molybdenum serves as a cofactor for
metalloenzymes.
Molybdenum is incorporated into:
Xanthine oxidase
Aldehyde oxidase
Sulfite oxidase
Deficiency
manifestations
Molybdenum deficiency is rare in humans.

Its deficiency causes xanthinuria with low

plasma and urinary uric acid concentrations.


Molybdenosis is a rare disorder caused by

excessive consumption of molybdenum.


Symptoms:

Impairment in growth, diarrhea & anemia.
