Summer Internship Overview

EVA Team
Learned basic of NX-8
Learned about the ISS in great detail
Learned about EVA Procedure
Learned a great deal about specific hardware such as the WETA,
ETVCG, VSSA, and the SSU.
I assisted the team by making an Hardware Fam for the
WETA/ETVCG. I also helped on boot camps and EVA Fams.
Checked EVA procedure for EVAs in Increment 40

IDA

Learned about the IDA project. How it worked, why it

was needed, and how it was going to be installed.
Got to see how IDA was being prepared for the
customer
Saw the white glove test being conducted to make sure that
there were no sharp edges on any of the surfaces that the
astronaut would interact with
I also shadowed a few employees who were working on
the IDA project and learned more about the process for
getting hardware up on ISS.
Got to see how it is that changes to hardware get processed and
dealt with
Got to sit in on various review sessions for EVA procedures

On Site Visits

Observed a 0-G run at the NBL

I got to observe multiple runs at the NBL for setting up the
cabling for IDA and for actually installing it.
I got to see the POGO training and virtual sim training.
Getting to try it out my self was an incredible experience and it
the technology itself was amazing
Talking with the astronauts
Observed Russian EVA from the MER
Difficult to keep up with what was happening

Misc. EVA
Took hours of NX-8 trainings
I had always wanted to learn how to use some type of 3D modeling
software, and finally got the opportunity to do so.
Talked with Kurt Rice and others on the 3rd floor about
Melanin Solar Panels
Learned about other projects
Some IVA
Spectrometer (material science and personal interest)
Failed previously, so this was a reattempt.

Work Accomplished
Got to work on a bootcamp for Inc 40-3 and focused on the EVA that
would be installing the new WETA and removing failed hardware.
Got to learn about a lot about the detailed nature of EVA (Thermal Clocks,
redundancy, and so on)
Completed Hardware Fam for WETA and ETVCG
Was guided on how make a Hardware Fam and was able to contribute to the team.
I learned how the EVA team has to adjust rapidly to change. I started off working on
a Bootcamp, then an EVA Fam, then a different EVA Fam, and finished on a
Hardware Fam because of changes made to increments.
Reviewed procedures for EVA 40-3
Stephanie taught me more about how to read and check EVA procedure
Learned about SSU and reviewed procedures with SSU
Saw EVA training at NBL for the second time
Got to meet Luca and Joe
Observed Russian EVA from the MER
Difficult to keep up with what was happening

ORBIT

What is ORBIT?
Payload integration process is pretty messy
things are tracked via e-mail
different teams dont communicate
manual labor is used where it shouldnt be
the process takes too long
ORBIT is a accumulation of tools that aims to help better this process
Helps automate processes
Enable communication between different Apps
Still growing and is only a two year project at this point.
Ideally ORBIT wants a life cycle tracking system that keeps
track of all hardware, changes to hardware, updates to
requirements for hardware and more.

ORBIT

What was my goal?

I was supposed to map out the Ascent Early-Configuration List/As-
Built Configuration List
This was not mapped yet
This would help the team understand the process better and see how it ties
in to different parts of ORBIT.
After mapping out the process I was supposed to try to improve it in
someway
After talking to several employees about their views on the process I was
able to map it out with different improvements made.
My work will actually help the team implement the changes to the process
during Spiral 4 and Phase 2 of the project.

What did I learn?

I started off talking to different people on the ORBIT team

and learning about the different functions of ORBIT.
Learned about the payload integration process and what part
Boeing plays
Learned what Systems Engineering was and why it was so
important to this specific group.
Learned some about Sigma Six
Learned how to use Visio, create process flows, and swim
lanes.
I learned about the different Organizations that deal with
payload integration and how they interact with Boeing and
the Payload Developers.

Results

I was able to map out the process

I made two improvements on the process
I wrote the requirments for one of the processes
I will be working until I leave on Thursday to illustrate what
the interface for one of my proposed apps would look like.

Final Results of my Work

Pause to look at final results briefly

Unfortunately my image is far too large to put onto this powerpoint.
I also made a list of requirements for an tool that would allow
for e-matrix to be updated automatically.
This would almost eliminate human labor in the process that creates
the ECL from the eMatrix.
Human intervention is only needed when the application picks up on
an inconsistancy in the data (cause by human error else where)
This would reduce human error which would save time and money.

Surviving the Lunar Night

What is the lunar night?

It is a night that lasts about 14 earth days.
A very horrible situation to be in if youre a rover or a Lander.
We had to survive the lunar night and came up with several
ideas

Survival Ideas

Melanin solar panels

DSSC (Dye-Sensitive Solar Cells), biomimicry inspired!
Bacteria near high radiation sites
Structure of Eumelanin. Its has broad spectrum absorption, which is
thought to be because eumelanin has various unique structures. Each
one absorbing a different type of radiation
Power beaming
Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators
Essentially controlled nukes

Continued

Fuel Cells
Hydrocarbon and Oxygen.
New harvard research showed...
Once more, the Sabatier reaction
Understanding where heat is lost the most and what is the
most cold sensitive equipment
Aerogel
Thermal Wadis
Smelted regolith with better thermal conductivity, which is used to
sustain the rovers operating temperature throughout the lunar night.

Comparison on LRV and LEV

We looked at the issues that were encountered when

designing the LRV
We compared the solutions that LRV used to overcome these issues
and compare them to what the LEV does.

Boeing Space: Impressions

I always had a passion for space, but this internship really

showed me how much hard work has to go into planning
every single step of our exploration of space.
Lots of passion, people are proud of what they do.
