MAT FOUNDATION ON

COMPRESSIBLE CLAY
CEMRE ALAR
1551613
GIVEN DATA ABOUT THE PROJECT

18 storey office building on 17m thick compressible clay

foundation is 20m x 60m x 1m and 5 m below the
ground level
Water table is at 5.5 m below ground level
Some test results and data;
Bore hole log
UU triaxial test results
Consolidation test results
Coefficents for immediate settlements
Stroud correlations
Settlement coefficients
Skempton bearing capacity factor.
CALCULATIONS
BASIC COMPUTATIONS:
Total pressure of the foundation = Qgross = 12.5*18
= 225 kPa
Total pressure of foundation level = Qexisting = 5*20
= 100 kPa (before excavation)
Qnet = Qgross Qexisting = 225 100 = 125 kPa
SETTLEMENT
Immediate Settlement:
Immediate Settlement(Cont):
Consolidation Settlement:
We divide the soil to the 4 sublayer
We can see that in each layer P 0 < Pc & Pf >
P c

We can use same C values for all layers,because we

have one data only
The Consolidation settlements are;
Additional heave settlements:
Total Settlement:

From the Fig 7.12 settlement coefficient (Soil

Mechanics,P.F.Craig) we can determine the
correction coefficient of the oedometer
settlement we have calculated above by using
A=0.7 & H/B= 0.6.We get =0.9 from the
graph and;
From Stroud,1974 correlations:
SETTLEMENT
Both method gives close results to each other
Two times greater from permissible settlement
Some methods for decreasing settlement:
Widening the mat foundation if possible
Decreasing the height of the building
Increasing the depth of foundation
Using stone columns
Applying preloading operations
BEARING CAPACITY

Then from Skemptons chart:

CONCLUSION
Suggestions for decreasing settlement are
given at the end of related part
For bearing capacity; the calculated factor of
safety is high enough for the design. Possible
arrangements for decreasing settlement also
increase the factor of safety.
Since all the test results are in (kg/cm 2) in
tests. We should use a conversion factor,
which is 99.0665, or converting the units from
(kg/cm2) to kPa
