LECTURER:

TOPIC 1:
TEACHING AND LEARNING MATERIALS
FOR THE CLASSROOM
SYNOPSIS
Teaching and learning materials are
very important to English language
teachers.
The uses of teaching and learning
materials are the best teaching aids
which can help our pupils to
understand what we are teaching.
SYNOPSIS
The lesson will be more effective and
interesting to the learners.
In this topic, you will be exposed to
the various types, purpose and
strengths and weaknessess of English
Language Teaching (ELT) materials
and resources.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this topic, you should be
able to:
Identify various types of teaching and
learning materials;
Select appropriate teaching and
learning materials;
Produce simple teaching and learning
materials;
Organise activities based on the
teaching and learning materials.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF
THE TOPIC
INTRODUCTION
Learning resources exist in many
formats.
Each format provides access to
information to meet learners various
needs and learning styles.
Resources are sources of input for
language learning that is, instances
of language which present the learner
with material to develop learning.
INTRODUCTION
They are the many ways of exposing
learners to different modalities of
language use; spoken, written,
technologically mediated; to different
registers; and to input beyond that
provided by the teacher.
TYPES OF MATERIALS AND
RESOURCES
One of the major sources of materials
for school pupils is textbook.
Textbooks provide you with several
advantages in the classroom.
TYPES OF MATERIALS AND
RESOURCES
Advantages of textbooks:
Helpful for novice teachers (materials to
be covered and the design of each lesson
are carefully spelled out)
Provide organised units of work (all the
plans and lessons you need to cover a
topic are given)
Provide you with a balanced,
chronological presentation of information
TYPES OF MATERIALS AND
RESOURCES
Advantages of textbooks:
A detailed sequence of teaching
procedures that tell you what to do and
when to do it
Provide administrators and teachers with
a complete programme
Excellent teaching aids
OTHER TYPES OF MATERIALS AND
RESOURCES
Resource centre
Language games
Language laboratory
NITE (Newspaper in Teaching English)
Blackboard Sketches
Use of Radios, T.V. for teaching
English
Internet for Teaching English
Use of ICT for Teaching English
PURPOSE OF THE TEACHING AND
LEARNING MATERIALS
Sources of input for language learning
Can be used as ways of promoting
output, either spoken or written
Can be used to provide scaffolding for
learning
Can be used to stimulate reflection
PURPOSE OF THE TEACHING AND
LEARNING MATERIALS
To conclude:

Resources can be used in multiple

ways. The key is to have resources
which open up multiple possible
uses and allow for flexibility and
creativity in teaching and learning.
ADVANTAGES OF USING TEACHING
AND LEARNING MATERIALS
When using institutionally derived or
teacher derived materials for a course, the
advantages are:
Relevance (suits students and
institutional needs and reflects local
content)
Reputation (enhance the reputation of the
institution)
Flexibility (can be revised or adapted as
needed)
DISADVANTAGES OF USING
TEACHING AND LEARNING
MATERIALS
When using institutionally derived or
teacher derived materials for a course, the
disadvantages are:
Cost (quality materials take time to
produce)
Quality (normally will not have the same
standard of design and production as
commercial materials)
Training (adequate training for teachers is
necessary)
