Alien Belief to

Ghost Belief
By Hana Alanskas, Sierra Via,
and Ian Zernell
Strong, positive
0.701 to 0.999
Sample survey
We predict that if a person has a strong belief in aliens,
then they will also have a strong belief in ghosts. We
predicted that it will be a strong positive correlation, and
the correlation will be anywhere from 0.701 to 0.999.

Introduction
Entire group of individuals.
The human beings on the planet: Earth.
A small group of individuals to be studied.
The 25 people we surveyed.
Any characteristic of an individual.
Alien and ghost belief.

Data Set
Since there is less proof of aliens than
there is of ghosts, we thought that if
people would be open-minded enough
to believe in aliens, they would be
open-minded enough to believe in
ghosts.

Data Table
(10, 1), (53, 1), and (100,
1) are outliers because
they are the furthest
points from the
regression line.

Graph
The correlation describes the direction and strength of a
straight line relationship between two quantitative
variables, usually written as r.
r = 0.184
Its a weak, positive correlation
The correlation is not valid
The fraction of the variation in the values of y that is
explained by the least squares regression line of y on x
r = 0.034

Interpret r and r
The line that makes the sum of the squares of the vertical
distances of the data points from the line as small as
possible
y = 0.174x + 58.938
y = 0.174(50) + 58.938
y = 0.8700 + 58.938
y = 67.638
We predict that if a persons belief in aliens is fifty, then
that persons belief in ghosts should also be fifty.
Our prediction is moderately valid.

Prediction
A variable that has an important effect.
Age of our samples, and religion of our samples.
Both causations are common response, because both the
explanatory and response variables are responding to our
lurking variables.

Lurking Variable
We predict that if a person has a strong belief in aliens,
then they will also have a strong belief in ghosts. We
predicted that it will be a strong positive correlation, and
the correlation will be anywhere from 0.701 to 0.999.
Our hypothesis was incorrect. There was a weak positive
correlation, and the correlation was 0.184.
