INTRODUCTION
Motion detector is mainly used as intruder alarm, home automation
system, energy efficiency system etc.
It will detect the motion of the people or objects and give the
appropriate output.
The circuit is based on a passive infrared (PIR) sensor.
The sensor automatically switches on a device when someone
comes close to it.
The circuit can be used for detection of theft or an unauthorised
person entering a restricted area or building.
It can also turn on lights when someone approaches the area
where it is installed.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
WORKING
The 230V AC mains is stepped down to 9V by a step down transformer(X1)
Secondary of transformer is connected to bridge rectifier(BR1).
Capacitor(c1) filters the ripples and the rectified output is given to regulator
7806(IC1).It provide 6V regulated DC output to operate the circuit.
LED1 is used as a power on indicator.
The 555 timer is configured in monostable mode.
Output of 555 is connected to base of transistor T2.
Contacts of relay are connected to the load.
The PIR sensor is a pyroelectric device developed for detection of human
body infrared radiation.
The sensor has a single output that goes high when a valid motion
detected.
That is the load is switched on whenever the PIR module senses a body in
motion nearby.
Under normal condition transistor T1 is cutoff and collector output
is high around 6V.
When motion is sensed, output pin of the sensor become high,
making transistor T1 to conduct for a few seconds, and voltage at
its collector goes low momentarily.
This low signal trigger IC2.
Output pin 3 of IC2 goes high for around 10 min, energising relay
through transistor T2, turning on the load for 10 min.
When someone comes infront of the PIR module, its output triggers
IC2 to to turn on the load.
Thereafter it is disabled automatically.

APPLICATIONS
Motion detectors can be used as an intruder alarm in home,
offices,shopping malls etc.
They can be used as counting machines.
They can be used as automatic light control.
They can be used in energy efficient systems ,home automation
system and light control systems.
Automatic ticket gates, entry way lighting, secuirity lighting,
automatic doors etc.
ADVANTAGES
When used for household appliances and equipment, it help to
increase energy savings such as by turning off in unoccupied
rooms.
IR detectors are safe for human health and do not affect pets.
These detectors detect objects upto 100m.
DISADVANTAGES
Work less effectively in rain and snow.
An outside detector mounted too close to a light that stays on at
night, will be triggered continuously.
