emissions, adaptation of transports and travel habits. Leading city within sustainable urban
development Purposeful efforts: sustainability in focus when the city expands, a cleaner and
quieter city, a greener city with green roofs and facades and open storm water management.
Sustainable use of natural resources Purposeful efforts: Malm will expand with an efficient use
of resources, and water accesses and the local nature will be protected.
The citys 295 000 inhabitants make Malm the third largest city in Sweden. . the project began in 1998, with the goal to
develop a socially, ecologically and economic ally sustainable housing area
1996
The Municipality of Malm acquires the 175 hectare artificial island, Vstra Hamnen, for the development of a new eco-district.
1997
Planning of the housing exhibition Bo01 and the structure plan for the entire Vstra Hamnen area commences.
2000
The plans for Vstra Hamnen are adopted. The plan divides the island into areas, of which Bo01 is one.
2001
The housing exhibition Bo01 opens to the public as part of the Vstra Hamnen urban development area.
2007
A quality programme is put into service to clarify objectives for the development of the new district.
559 homes completed in 2003
Today, 6000 people are working in the area
Goals
The goals of BoO1 were to create a leading example of a densely populated, environmentally sound neighbourhood, with
ecological sustainability as a bonus, providing 100% locally renewable energy sources that serve the area, and an
environmentally sound transport system. Diversity should be one characteristic of the area
Buildings
Five-storey blocks front the sea, further protecting inner buildings
There were no regulations regarding the design of house facades.
The aim was to create a variety of expressions.
One overall guidlines was: Pale facades towards the sea and more colourful towards the inner areas.
Public spaces
Varied forms of on-plot vegetation such as green walls and roofs reduce surface water and create identifiable locations within the
development.
An advanced sustainable urban drainage system creates an ecological, recreational and visual resource.
The area has an exiting mix of individually designed streets, pedestrian walks, alleyways and open squares.
Social interaction resulting from this is of great importance for the character of the whole area.
Recycled material has been used in the underlying layers of the streets and alleys
Transport
Inhabitants are encouraged to use environmentally friendly modes of transport.
The area is car free; bicycles and pedestrians have priority.
The bus service connects Bo01 to central areas with only 7 min
Energy
A 100% locally renewable energy approach adopted in the development has been successful.
In Bo01, 1000 homes get their energy supply from renewable sources; solar energy, wind power and water. The plants are linked
to the energy system in the city. In certain periods, the district can borrow from the city and in other periods of supply the energy
system with its surplus. (Vstra Hamnen, The Bo01 area)
Orientation of building facades and roof forms maximize solar gain. In addition, solar thermal panels, wind turbines and
photovoltaics help minimize energy use while maintaining the overall integrity of the architectural and urban form.
Bo01 residents are encouraged to regularly monitor their energy consumption using information technology installed in their
homes
Waste
Collection stations for 6 fractions are located in the properties.
They go to recycling plants; the organic wast is taken to biogas plants.
Lifestyle
The green areas and the contact with water and sun rises quality of life
and can make people healthier
Apparently at least 20,000 international guests have been attracted to the city
Malm is expected to be sustainable by 2020
