Simple Vapor Compression Refrigeration
System

Vapor-Compression Refrigeration or vapor-compression

refrigeration system (VCRS), in which
the refrigerant undergoes phase changes, is one of the
many refrigeration cycles and is the most widely used method
for air-conditioning of buildings and automobiles.
It is also used in domestic and commercial refrigerators,
large-scale warehouses for chilled or frozen storage of foods
and meats, refrigerated trucks and railroad cars, and a host of
other commercial and industrial services.
Main Components of VCRS

Compressor
Condenser
Receiver
Expansion Valve
Evaporator

Algorithm
1. select the refrigerant to use
2. Fix the evaporating and condensing temperature
3. Find the different enthalpies and specific heat from the
thermodynamic property table of the refrigerant selected
4. Calculate COP in absence of degree of superheating and
sub cooling conditions
5. Input degree of superheating and degree of subcooling
6. Find COP in presence of degree of superheating and
degree of subcooling
7. Calculate the change in COP
8. Repeat from step 5 with no of times equal to no of
different inputs
9. Form the table for COP and change in COP and plot the
graphs
Calculations
Refrigerant R134a
Condenser temperature = 40 degree Celsius
Evaporator temperature = 0 degree Celsius
h1 = 395 kJ/kg
h1 = 398.356 kJ/kg
h2 = 419.821 kJ/kg
h3 = 256.538 kJ/kg
Cpg = 1.12 kJ/kg K
Cpf = 1.5kJ/kg K
In absence of superheating and sub cooling,
COP= =6. 4505
Assuming
degree of superheating = 5 degree Celsius
degree of sub cooling = 3 degree Celsius
Therefore,
h2 = h2 = h2 + Cpg(degree of superheat) = 425.421 kJ/kg
h3 = h3 Cpf(degree of sub cool) = 252.039 kJ/kg
COP = = 5.4061

COP = 5.4061
change in COP = 1.0444
