In this paper, YOU are tested on
YOUR linguistic ability to:
Read and comprehend linear or non-linear
texts to transfer information
Extract information given and give
suggestions or relay information
Construct sentences with the correct
structure and grammar.
To express ideas with a good command of
the language.
Section A: Text Completion

Section A (5 Blanks 10 marks)


A picture of an item with information
surrounding the picture (notes in point form)
Pupils fill in the blanks in the passage by
extracting the given information.
2 marks are awarded for each correct
answer.
Section B Non-Linear Text

Information transfer question in phrase/


sentence form.
YOU have to read and understand information in
the text (brochure, poster, flyer, pamphlet, notice,
advertisement and etc.).
Question B(i): Listing three things
Question B(ii): Transferring information in sentence-
level by giving suggestions (suggest) or relaying
information (list) to somebody between 50 to 80
words.

Remember Spelling , punctuation and legibility.

Look at the text and find the


information you need to answer the
question. Look for key words.

Transfer the information. Check spelling,


grammar and punctuation. Write neatly
and clearly.
Section B: Question B(ii) 12 marks

Read the INSTRUCTIONS (for who, for what?) FIRST!

UNDERLINE the KEYWORDS in the question/ instruction.


There is no right or wrong answers. Just give good reasons.

This means, for each of the information you provide,


you must give one good reason for making the
suggestion/ list.
List down the points and reasons make a NOTE.

DO USE
a variety of sentences; simple and compound.
Adjectives
Linkers to give the description a smoother flow. Examples: Besides,
Therefore, Moreover, In Addition
Section C: 25 marks

Narrative writing.
You are TELLING a STORY.
You have pictures.
You have words.
So, PLAN your story well!
Section C: General Guide
Read the instructions.
Look at the pictures carefully.
Read and understand the notes given for each picture.
Understand the story.
Pay attention to the words given to give you a clue to
what tense to use.
Use the notes given and, write THREE paragraph(s) to
describe the pictures or story. Write neatly.
The THREE: Introduction, Body, Closure.
So, HOW to score A? (target this!)

ENGLISH COMPOSITION: BIP (014)


Section A : 10 / 10 marks
Section B : 12 / 15 marks (3/3 + 9/12)
Section C : 18 / 25 marks

Sections A + B + C = 10/10 + 3/3 + 9/12 + 18/25


= 40/50
= 80% Grade A!
