INTRODUCTION
Introduction

A pump is a mechanical device that imparts energy to the fluids such as liquids and
gases or sometimes slurries by mechanical action. It is a hydraulic machine, which
convert mechanical energy into the hydraulic energy.

Pumps are classified as rotary, reciprocating or centrifugal.

Centrifugal pump is a device in which mechanical energy is converted into the

pressure energy by means of centrifugal force acting on the fluid.

Methodology

Assumptions

CFD simulation of flow is done on following basic assumptions

Steady state conditions

Constant fluid properties

Incompressible fluid flow

The walls were assumed to be smooth

Methodology

Boundary conditions
The boundary conditions are specified as follows:

Mass flow inlet is given at suction pipe entering section.

Inlet passage faces, rotating faces of impeller and fixed faces of volute casing
considered as wall
At outlet face of delivery pipe section pressure outlet is applied.
The suction pipe, impeller passages, volute casing, inlet passage and delivery pipe
considered as Fluid zone.

Solution parameters

3-D double precision solver used to solve for simulation

Pure water is taken as working fluid

Standard K- model is used for turbulence modeling

Convergence criteria for continuity, velocity and turbulence parameters was set 10-4

First order scheme is used for pressure correction as well as for solving momentum,
turbulent kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate

A simple scheme is used for pressure velocity coupling

SIMULATION OF PUMP PERFORMANCE WITH VARIATION OF SPEED

Velocity contour
Helpful in identifying the direction of fluid particles flowing through the different
components
The velocity continuously increases as the mechanical energy is converted into the kinetic
energy

Velocity contours at different span wise location of 20 (a), 50 (b) and 80% (c)
CONCLUSION
Conclusion

The mesh is generated successfully using ANSYS-CFX

The increase of the designed flow rate causes a reduction in the total

head of the pump

Near leading edge of the blade low pressure is observed

The performance results show that total static head is the function of

the mass flow rate with constant operating speed

Conclusion

The model is free from cavitation at design point

The formation of cavitation on the blade is increasing with the

increase of mass flow rate and rotating speed
