Building Blocks

Definition
A block of stone or other material, larger than a brick, used in
building
(or)
A Building units having at least one dimensions in excess of the
maximum specified for bricks.
Types of Blocks
Laterite Blocks
Concrete Blocks
Hollow blocks
Solid Blocks
Burnt Clay Hollow Blocks
Stabilized Mud Blocks
Stone Masonry Blocks
Laterite Blocks
Laterite is a residual rock formation found in hot humid
regions
The IS standard blocks are 390 mm x 190mm x 190mm and
590mm x 290mm x 290mm
Strength of the block 2.0-2.5 Mpa
Concrete Blocks
A concrete block is a masonry unit that either contains single
or multiple hollows, or is solid.
It is made from conventional cement mixes and various types
of aggregates, including sand, gravel, crushed stone.
Types
Solid Concrete Blocks
Hollow Concrete Blocks
Solid Concrete Blocks
Solid concrete blocks have a size of 400 mm 200 mm 150
mm
To reduce the weight of the block no fine concretes are used
( no fine aggregate)
The blocks should satisfy the strength requirement of
4 N/mm2
Solid blocks have core holes that take up less than 25 percent
of the cross-sectional area of the block.
Hollow Blocks
Hollow blocks of sizes 400 mm 200 mm 190 mm and also
of sizes 400 mm 300 mm.
These blocks also should satisfy the strength requirement of
4 N/mm2.
A hollow-core concrete block is more than 50 % solid.
Burnt Clay Hollow Blocks
Size : 190mm x 90mm x 90mm , 290mm x 90mm x 90mm,
290mmx 140mmx90mm
Minimum average compressive strength shall not be less than
3.5 N/mm2
Water Absorption Shall not be more than 20% by weight
Stabilized Mud Blocks
Made primarily from damp soil compressed at high pressure
to form blocks.
Blocks are stabilized with a chemical binder such as Portland
cement they are called compressed stabilized earth block.
