Schizophrenia) in Giving
Psychoeducation to People With
Schizophrenia and Their Families

Schizophrenia is brain disease resulting from a disproportionate
BACKGROUND level of dopamine, one of the essential brain chemicals is regarded
as mental disorder psychotic characterized by a loss of affective
feeling or an emotional response and withdrawal from
interpersonal relations, often followed by delusions and
hallucinations

In Indonesia the number of people with schizophrenia represented


10 % of the population. In these cases, around 20 % are in urban
areas ( Ismail , 2016 )
The combination of antipsychotic treatment and a psychosocial
approach are an effective way in achieving healing and preventing a
recurrence of a schizophrenic break.

Psychoeducation is one of the psychosocial therapies involving the


schizophrenic , family and the key people in the patients life.
The goal of psychoeducation is to learn as much as possible about
what schizophrenia is and how treatment to build knowledge and
useful skills can prevent the emergence of a recurrence.
ICCS : Indonesian Community Care for Schizophrenia
ICCS is a support group for people with Schizophrenia and their
families and general public who is interested to support mental
health awareness
ICCS currently using social media mainly facebook group as a
ICCS communication tool between members

The purpose of this research is to find:

Research (1). The ICCSs communication strategy in giving psychoeducation


through Facebook groups
Purposes (2) The ICCSs communications strategy in giving psychoeducation
through meeting between members,
(3). The advantages and disadvantages of ICSSs communications
strategy either through Facebook or through a face to face
meeting.
This study used qualitative methods
A qualitative approach is used because the researchers intend to
determine,understand, explain and gain in-depth overview of the
communication strategy of ICCS in doing psychoeducation to

The number of samples in this research were 20 people consisting
of 4 people with Schizophrenia and 16 people are their families
who act as care giver
The technique used in this research is descriptive analysis
ICCS : History in Brief
Bagus Utomo as a founder of ICCS start this
organization from his family experience, his brother
having Schizophrenia in 1995 and he didnt know the
diagnosis for 10 years and took alternative medicine.
Finding & One day he found Schizophrenia from internet and
bought on line books. After taking medicatioin, his

He decided to share his family experience using
online media, start from mailing list at yahoogroups,
blog, website, and finally he moved my
yahoogroups to facebook group in 2009.
In facebook group, the membership growing rapidly. Now is 19,200
members and 15 cities
Mutual Sense of solidarity grow and then they become willing to share
support group experince. The feel the benefit of going through the recovery
process together.
They met offline for the first time at 2009 attended only by 8
people. Then they met regularly offline with more and more people
They finally decide to rent a house for office secretariate in 2012.
At the end of 2012 Bagus Utomo received Guislain Award in
Belgium. He uses the award money to build support programme.
In 2015 they register to the government as Yayasan Peduli
Skizofrenia Indonesia or Indonesian Schizophrenia Foundation.

They are focusing specifically on schizophrenia as an entry point to


make a larger change in mental health movement in Indonesia.
-Considering that schizophrenia is the most stigmatized in our country.
Issues With huge number of Pasung (shackle and restrain) and homelessness.

Government start to include them in their decision making. But it is
a very slow process
They decide to improve internal organization and building bigger
members for stronger pressure in the future .

translating articles or information about the topic.
- Supporting each other. It is a catharsis medium for consumers
and caregivers to share their burdens.
-Discussing family support, coping mechanisms, medication
taken and issues relating to mental disorder treatment.
- Providing information about seminars and workshops locally,
nationally, and across the country.
On line and Off
Line Activities Off line -Art therapy : painting, making sculptures, making trinkets
of ICCS - Yoga therapy to reduce emotional problems
- Free counseling handled by a psychiatrist
-Group therapy : peer sharing group/FGD with caregivers,
sufferers, survivors, and a peer support 2 times a month
- Psychoeducation for people with Schizophrenia and their
families who take a role as care givers and mental health worker
Psychoeducation is intended for families who live with
SchizophreniaMental Health Professionals (psychologists,
doctors, nurses, social workers etc, the Mental Disorders
Rehabilitation Board and members of ICCS.
The material consists of:

ICCS has provided communication activities to share information, knowledge and experiences of
schizophrenia and those affected by it . It makes networking among people with schizophrenia
and their families and people who is interested to support mental health awareness

Psychoeducation can be provided either on-line via the Facebook group as well as off line through
a meeting scheduled with materials introduced in the form of modules
The communication strategy should be tailored to the characteristics of the media and the
Conclusion recipient.
The repetition method is suitable for the target audiences memorability while the canalizing
method is the right way in the face to face approach.
The message content, which is informative and educative. seems appropriate for
psychoeducation.
The advantages of the communication strategy are that the content of the message is easily
understood and is communicated with communicative through two-way communication.
The disadvantages are a lack of variety in the educational materials offered in the standard
modules and the infrequent updates to the Yogyakarta branchs Facebook group.
