 INTRODUCTION

Electricity existence comes into coal mines in the beginning of 20th

century in the form of direct current for rail haulage. At that time DC
current used because most system that time driven by DC generators.
The advantage of using this was outstanding because DC series wound
motor has good traction properties. Speed can be controlled by
inserting a resistance in series with the armature of motor. The DC
system voltage 250 or550V were used in coal mines.

The motor which we are using three phase squirrel cage induction
motor and its rating is 125volt, half hour because it is a hand held
machine and also it reduces size and cable used is five core VIR
insulated PCP sheath.

Motor
The specification of motor is based on design, manufacture, supply and
centrifugal pumps.

Requirements of Equipment's
The equipment's should be compact and robust so that it can be roughly
usage in mines.
The equipment's shall withstand in heavy dust laden atmosphere, ambient
temperature in open cast mines.
The overall design of the pump shall be such that it can be shifted to the
place where it is required.
Motor Specifications
The drive should be continuously rated, foot mounted, TEFC squirrel cage induction
motor and it requires 3 phase ac supply with restricted earthed neutral and the motor shall
follow norms IS: 325. The motor requires non FLP cables and motor should be of
continuous duty type. Motor requires IP-55 protection and enclosure is TEFC Class of
insulation is F. Motor terminal should have sufficient clearance with ground.
Starter
Starter used in open cast mines is HT starter, 6.6KV DOL starter/ star delta starter
required for starting and operation of pumps. The electrical components of the starter shall
be designed in such a way that it should withstand voltage variation from -2 percent to 10
percent and frequency can drop up to 47 HZ and also all electrical components shall
follow BIS specification. Some of them are IS-3427, IS-375, IS-3618,IS-
2148,IS3072,IS2419.

MINING CABLES
PVC (Polyvinyl Cables)
These cables are used for distribution of power for haulage, conveyor
belt, pump motor etc.
Trailing Cables
There are mainly two types
Flexible trailing cables
FTC are used for portable machine like coal drill, coal cutter, shearer
and plough.
PWA/PATC (Pliable Armoured Trailing Cable)
These cables are used for transportable machine such as AFC, shovel,
dragline etc.
CONCLUSION

The aim of supplying power to open caste mine is to supply power to all
the equipment which are used for open caste mine in consideration of
safety of personal who are working there and also continuity of supply
should be maintained and also it should be considered that the power
which is supplied to all the electrical equipment should be economical.
The cables used for open cast have certain advantage like they have
high charging current but the disadvantage is joining of two cables are
difficult.
