Body mechanic is a two word phrase used to
describe the movement we make each day
during normal activities including lying in bed
,sitting,standing,lifting,pulling,pushing and
walking.
1.ABDUCTION-moving away from the median
line.
2.ADDUCTIOcN-moving towards the median
line.
3.ASSISTANCE-requires help with task,but is
also to undertake some part of task
independently.
4.BIOMECHANICS-looks at effects of movement
and normal pattern of movement.
5.CIRCUMDUCTION-moving through the circle.
6.CONTRACTURES-deformity caused by
shortening of muscles.
7.DEPENDANT-unable to help,need full
assistance to achieve task.
8.DISABILITY-any restriction or lack of ability to
perform task.
8.DORSAL-relating to back.
9.DORSIFLEXION-bending of foot or toes
upward.
10.EVERSION-turning outward.
11.EXTENSION-straightening.
12.EXTERNAL ROTATION-rolling outwards.
13.FLEXION-bending
14.HANDICAP-disability that prevent fullfillment
of role.
15.HEMIPARESIS-weakness/paralysis
16.HEMIPLEGIA-paralysis of oneside
17.IMPAIREMENT-any loss or abnormality of
physical or psychological function
18.INTERNAL ROTATION-rolling inward
19.INVERSION-turning inward
20.PARALYSIS-loss of motor function
21.PLANTER-related to foot
22.POSITION-posture or placement
23.QUADERIPLEGIA-paralysis of all four limb
24.SEMI-PRONE- lying on one side
25.SUPINATION-turning upwards
26.SUPINE-lying on the back with face upward.
27.PRONE-lying on face downward.
Body mechanics means the co-oriented use of
the body part to produce motion and maintain
equilbrium in relation to both internal and
external forces.
1.To provide maximum comfort and relaxation.
2.To aid in normal body function.
3.To prevent contractures and neuromuscular
deformities and complication.
4.To conserve maximum possible energy by
preventing unnecessary strains.
1)STANDING POSTURE-Good body mechanics
for standing including wearing shoes that
provides support both for back and for feet.
2)SITTING POSTURES-Sit in chairs with straight
backs when possible and use pillow or rolled-
up blanket for lower back support.
3)MOVING POSTURE-Different postures are
recommended for good and bad mechanincs for
pushing,pulling, and carring object.always bring
object to the body.never carry heavy object that
causes strain on your back.
4)LYING POSTURE-body mechanics also effect
the back when you are lying on the bed.when
lying on your side, put a pillow between your
knees to keep your spine straightened an
prevent strain on your back.
5)PRACTISE-practising a good posture and
good mechanics will take a while to get used to
it.
The wider the base of support the greater the
stability of the body.
The lower the center o gravity the greater the
stability of body.
The equilibrium of an object is maintained.
Facing the direction of movement prevents
abnormal twisting of spine.
Dividing balanced activity between arms and
legs reduce risk of injury.
LIFTING
REACHING
PIVOTING
AVOID STOOPING
Keep the work as close as possible to your
body .it put less strain on your back ,legs and
arms.
Keep the work at comfortable height to avoid
exessive bending at the waist.
Keep your body in good physical condition to
reduce the chance of injury.
To reduce exessive fatigue
To avoid muscle strain and tears.
Skeletal injuries
Injury to the patients
Injury to assisting staff member.
Keep the lower portion of your back in its
normal position at all times.
Move as close to the patients bed as you can.
Dont twist your body.
Set your feet into comfortable position and
support.
Keep your head upright and hold your
shoulder up
IT is Easier to pull ,push o roll an object than
it is to lift it.
Movement should be smooth and co-
ordinated rather than jereky.
Less energy or force is required to keep and
object moving than it is to start and stop it.
Use the arms and legs muscles as much as
possible, the back muscle little as possible.
