OBESITY

OBESITY

Obesity now considered as a Killer Lifestyle disease is an important cause of

preventable death worldwide
According to World Health Organization (WHO), 1.2 Billion people worldwide are
officially classified as overweight.
This is most sedentary generation of people in the history of the world .
An excess calories intake in relation to caloric expenditure results in deposition of fat
or adipose tissue

BODY MASS INDEX ( BMI )
WHAT IS BODY MASS INDEX?

Body mass index (BMI) is an estimate of body fat based on height and weight. It doesnt measure
body fat directly, but instead uses an equation to make an approximation. BMI can help determine
whether a person is at an unhealthy or healthy weight.
A high BMI can be a sign of too much fat on the body, while a low BMI can be a sign of too little fat on
the body. The higher a persons BMI, the greater their chances of developing certain serious
conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes. A very low BMI can also cause
health problems, including bone loss, decreased immune function, and anemia.
While BMI can be useful in screening children and adults for body weight problems, it does have its
limits. BMI may overestimate the amount of body fat in athletes and other people with very muscular
bodies. It may also underestimate the amount of body fat in older adults and other people who have
lost muscle mass.
TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT

Non Surgical
Surgical
NON SURGICAL
DIET
1..
a special course of food to which one restricts oneself,
either to lose weight or for medical reasons
Its no secret that the amount of calories people eat and
drink has a direct impact on their weight: Consume the
same number of calories that the body burns over time,
and weight stays stable.
FITNESS & EXERCISE
Exercising regularly, every day if possible, is the single most
important thing you can do for your health. In the short term,
exercise helps to control appetite, boost mood, and improve
sleep. In the long term, it reduces the risk of heart disease,
stroke, diabetes, dementia, depression, and many cancers.
BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION
Behaviour Modification and Physical Activity
(Weight maintenance, Overweight, Obesity and Severe Obesity)
Behaviour plays a significant role in weight management. Modifying
behaviour that contributed to developing obesity is one way to treat the
disease of obesity either alone or in conjunction with other treatments. A few
behaviour change strategies include:
Self-monitoring
Increasing physical activity
Becoming educated about the body and how to nourish it appropriately
Engaging in a support group
Setting realistic goals
PHARMACOTHERAPY

Along with diet, exercise, and behaviour modification, drug therapy

may be a helpful component of treatment for patients who are
overweight or obese. The role of drug therapy has been questioned,
however, because of concerns about efficacy, safety, and the
observation that body weight slows and then plateaus with continued
treatment, and most patients regain weight when their weight-loss
drugs are stopped.
SURGICAL
Lap Band Surgery
LAP BAND SURGERY

Laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) is

a surgical procedure that involves the placement of an
adjustable belt around the upper portion of the stomach
using a laparoscope. The band is made of silicone and can
be tightened by adding saline to fill the band (like blowing
air into a doughnut-shaped balloon)
Gastric band surgery (commonly referred to as "lap band") is a procedure to help
obese patients lose weight.
During gastric band surgery, an inflatable band is placed around the top portion of
the stomach, creating a small pouch. During meals, food accumulates in this top
stomach pouch, causing the stomach to feel full after only a small portion is
consumed.
The gastric band can often be placed laparoscopically and is adjustable, allowing
people to modify their dietary habits and reduce dependence on the lap band over
time.
