The events recorded in Exodus indicate that through Moses a new and deeper
understanding of God was revealed. The Israelites as a whole began to realize that
the God of Moses was a jealous od, who would not tolerate the worship of other
gods.
What is this prohibition meant in practice was that images of God could be
built out of words but not out of things. As a result in Jewish faith, words
became the vehicle of religious expression- especially the words found in
the Jewish Scriptures
The other great religions that followed Judaism were strongly affected by
this prohibition. Along with Judaism, Christianity and Islam would become
known as religions of the word because of the central importance
of sacred scriptures in their histories
