According to the CDC website, any mammal can get rabies. The most common wild reservoirs of rabies are raccoons, skunks, bats, foxes,
and coyotes. In our case, the most likely exposure would come from bats. Domestic mammals can also get rabies. Cats, cattle, and dogs
are the most frequently reported rabid domestic animals in the United States. In our case, our otters could theoretically be infected. There
has never been a reported case of sea otters with rabies, but there have been cases of river otters.

The human immune system is quite well suited to fight off most infections, however, there are limitations. Anyone can become sick from a
zoonotic disease, including healthy people. However, some people may be more at risk than others and should take steps to protect
themselves. People who are more likely to get sick from infection with certain diseases include children under 5, Adults older than 65, and
people with weakened immune systems. Immune systems can be weakened by stress, poor nutrition, the presence of illness and from
drugs and medication which suppress the immune system (like steroids).
