The Length of an Unknown Side of Two
Similar Figures
Example 1
1. Observe the two similar polygons ABCDE and
RSTUV below. Determine the values of x and y!
Solution:
The Ratio of corresponding sides : AE = 9 = 3

to find x and y: AB = AE

x = 3 x = 12 : 2

The value of y : 2y = 15
DC = AE y = 15 : 2 = 7,5 cm

Solution:
Use ratio of corresponding sides to find x, y and z

SIMILAR TRIANGLE
THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SIMILARITY OF
TWO TRIANGLE:

1. The corresponding angle of both triangles are in


the same size or
2. The proportion of the length of the corresponding
sides of both triangles are the same or
3. The proportions of two respective sides of the
corresponding angle are the same
Measure the angles size of both triangles by using a ruler and a protractor

So, UTV and URS are similar

a. Show that ABC and EDC are
similar.
b. Write down the proportions of
the corresponding sides.
