MOTION

What are Motion and Speed?

Motion is a change in position.
Examples?
The Earth travels in space.
A car carries you from place to place.
An amusement park ride spins you around.

All change, including motion, takes place over time.

Elapsed Time
Elapsed Time is the amount of time that passes from one event to
another.

How to calculate?
Time of the earlier event Time of the later event

Miami NYC. Your flight arrives at 8pm and lands at 11pm.

What is your elapsed time?

11:00 (arrival time) 8:00 (departure time) = ?

= 3 hour travel time = elapsed time
Speed
Speed is the rate at which the position of an object changes.

The more distance covered in a given time, the greater its speed.

How to calculate?
Average speed = distance / time

What two units does speed use?

Distance and time
Distance
Distance the length of the path between two points.
The length of the path traveled by an object in motion.

Distance units?
Meters (m, km, mm, etc.), miles
Calculating Speed your turn!

Who is faster? A runner that can run the 400m in 72 seconds? Or a

runner that can run 1600m in 5:10 (310 seconds)?

400m/72 s = 5.55m/s
1600m/310 s = 5.16m/s
Practice Calculating Speed

If there is 867 miles between the city of Newark, NJ and Milwaukee,

WI and it will take 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to fly between the two.
What is the speed the plane travels at?

867 miles / 150 minutes = Speed

867 miles / 150 minutes = 5.78 mi/min
Practice Calculating Speed

It takes Ms. Maher about 18 minutes to drive to NVOT in the

morning from a mysterious location 7.4 miles away. What is her
average driving speed?

7.4 miles / 18 minutes = Speed

7.4 miles / 18 minutes = 0.41 miles / minute
How do we Calculate Distance?

Distance = ?

Distance = Speed x Time

Practice Calculating Distance

John and Jesse took a flight to Yellowstone National Park in

Wyoming from Laguardia Airport. Their flight took 7 hours and the
plane traveled at 311 miles/hour. How far apart are the two
destinations?

7 hours X 311 miles/hour = Distance

7 hours x 311 miles/hour = 2177 miles
Practice Calculating Distance

Sarah is a freshman on the NVOTs track team, she ran a race but is
not sure what distance she ran. Her time was 64 seconds and her
coach applauded her efforts and reinforced that she ran 6.25
seconds/meter. What distance did Sarah run during her track race?

64 seconds X 6.25 seconds/meter = Distance

64 seconds X 6.25 seconds/meter = 400 meters
How do we Calculate Time?

Time = ?

Time = Distance / Speed

Practicing Calculating Time

Your family road trips from NVOT to Walt Disney World in Sunny
Orlando, Florida! Your parents are ready to drive 1,106 miles
averaging 65 mph through the journey. How long will it take you?
Time = Distance / Speed
Time = 1,106 miles / 65mph
Time = 17 hours
