INTRODUCTION

3D printing is actually one of the

several manufacturing process
The first step is to create a 3D
madel of the object to be
printed
This model can be designed with
CAD software or through
reverse engineering technique
The CAD file is converted to a
standard additive manufacturing
file format-usually an STL file
Conversion to a STL file will
tessellate shapes
The file is then digitally sliced
into layers
The stage requires the transfer
of the STL file and setting up of
the machine
In order to print economically
i.e. maximize cost savings and
reduce material waste usully
multiple parts are printed in one
go
In fourth step , the machine which is only
controlled by a computer builds the model
layer by layer
The layer thickness dictates the final shape
quality and depends on the machine and
process
The size of model depends on the machine
size
After building the part and potentially
applying cooling and curing priods ,the
model can be removed from the machine
Additional post processing can occur such
as cleaning, polishing, painting and finishing of
the surface to the desired standard
ADVANTAGES OF AM

Greater design ability

Traditional constraints of manufacture are reduced or eliminated
No tooling is required which can be barrier to production due to the high cost
Optimization of time that is it can produce models quickly, in hours, not weeks
Efficient material use due to the exact production of parts
Commercial advantage and increased competitiveness
Material efficiency
Environmental benefits
The emissions from trans-port are reduced because of the ability to manufacture
anywhere
3D printing is becoming more affordable in compare to other manufacturing process
MATERIAL

Polycrystalline nickel-based super alloy

Nickel based super alloys incorporate chromium, cobalt, and rhenium
DISCUSSION

Siemens has achieved a breakthrough in the 3D printing of gas turbine blades

For the first time, a team of experts has full-load tested gas turbine blades that were entirely
produced using additive manufacturing
The tests were conducted at the Siemens test center for industrial gas turbines in Lincoln,
Great Britain
Within just 18 months, the international project team succeeded in developing the entire
process chain, from the design of individual components, to the development of materials, all
the way to new methods of quality control and the simulation of component service life
The turbine blades were installed in a 13-megawatt (MW) SGT-400-type industrial gas turbine
The printed turbine blades were produced from a high-temperature-resistant, powdered
polycrystalline nickel-based super alloy and are able to withstand the high pressures, extreme
temperatures, and centrifugal forces that arise during turbine operation
The 3D printed components were tested at 13,000 revolutions per minute and temperatures
beyond 1,250 degrees Celsius.
In what could be an important milestone in industrial additive manufacturing, tech giant
Siemens has just announced the successful testing of a new turbine blade design
The 3D printed blades were made by Materials Solutions
This exciting technology is changing the way we manufacture by reducing the lead time
for prototype development up to 90 percent," said Meixner
Because of this efficiency and the success of the testing, Siemens plans to continue
utilizing Materials Solutions 3D printing facilities and expertise to improve its turbine
systems
CONCLUSION

Until now, blades for gas turbine were either cast or forged
Additive manufacturing changes all this-a complex, time-consuming , and costly
procedures
With AM , a laser beam is directed at fine layers of metal powder, which are heated and
melted
When the laser is removed , the metal gets cooled
The process is repeated until the blade model from the 3D printer is finished
FUTURE WORK

For future it may be breakthrough in case of mass production

Reliability of turbine blade with suitable strength
90% optimization of time
