An input x is entered the machine, then processed it bu
performing operations defined by the function f on yhe
input, and that gives a result as an output f(x). For any
input, there is a unique output from the machine.
Objectives:
As a class, we will recall some basic concepts and ideas about
functions, which you have already learned in your Grade 8 math.
Function:
Is relationship between two variables such that every input
corresponds to exactly one output. In symbols, we say that for every
x, there is exactly one y.
Notation: f(x) = y
Independent variable = x
Dependent variable = y
We read this a s f of x is equal to y. This shows that y is a function of the independent
variable.
Domain and Range
Domain: Set of all possible values for the independent variable x.
Range: Set of all possible values for the dependent variable y.
Need to know:
F(x) does not mean MULTIPLICATION. We are not multiplying the
variables f and x. It is a married symbol; they should never be
separated.
If any vertical line intercects a graph at one point , then it is a graph of
a function.
