chance to serve the needy.

 We would also like to thank Dr. Aravindhakshan for letting us be a part of

the Pain and Palliative care unit and for guiding us throughout the project.
PAIN & PALLIATIVE CARE SOCIETY
AN OVERVIEW

• Main concern to find out ways and means to lessen the sufferings of the
unfortunate human beings and give them a happy life, at least for the
period nature permits them to live.

• Usually in a hospital consultation , treatment and dispensing of medicines

is the routine affair. But here the group envisaged a hospice culture in
which the suffering individual is the central sun. The doctors , nurses
,volunteers , neighbours and family weave a network of love , co-operation
, care and treatment.

• Activities of the society include outpatient clinic ,home care visits ,

,inpatient ward ,renal patients ,physiotherapy unit and rehabilitation.

• The Society and the patients visiting the society for treatment are
indebted to the District Panchayat for their humanitarian outlook.
OBJECTIVE
• We are not doctors who can provide them with medications.
• Inspite of studying engineering our objective when we selected this
project was to be approachable ,kind, caring, empathetic ,helpful
and authentic which all human-beings possess. These feelings of
human beings when put in the right way can make a lot of change
to others life.

BACKGROUND OF THE PROBLEM

• Thousands of patients with advanced illness and cancer suffer from

severe pain .Either they are financially low or there will be no
further treatment possible .
• The only thing that we can do is to take care of them ,give them a
positive attitude and surrounding till their last day both
emotionally and spiritually .

outpatient unit shared their
experiences with us.
There are regular home visits on all days except Sundays.

Two teams of volunteers including nursing staff visit the patients in their homes with
medicines and all other necessary medical equipments.

Procedures like catheterization etc. are done during home visits which saves the
patient from the trouble of being taken to hospital for this purpose.

The relatives of the patients are given proper guidance in wound care ,medication
,diet etc.

The need of involvement of every member of the family in care and treatment of the
patient is stressed.

Home Care visits strengthen the confidence of the patient and family members to
face the hard times of illness and social as well as financial distresses.
Home care gave lot of
learning experience . It
was a very touching
experience.

families every month

better when they saw
the doctor ,nurse and
the volunteers.
The volunteers of pain and palliative care
play major roles during home care. These
patients are physically ill and also
emotionally as they are unable to move.
The volunteers give them and their
family a moral support during these visits.
The Society has
been able to set up
Inpatient Ward in
2008 .
Nearly 10lakhs was
required for its
infrastructural work.

The sad part is that 25

percent of patients admitted
had their end in the IP ,but all
of them had a peaceful and
honourable end.
PHYSIOTHERAPY UNIT

Physiotherapy
remediates
impairments and
promotes mobility.

Medical as well as
rehabilitation support
are provided to persons
who suffer from
paraplegia and
hemiplegia.
ROAD AHEAD

 The future goal as mentioned by the doctors of the Pain and Palliative is
to have a Home for orphaned cancer patients and a shelter for the old
age people who are homeless. We have decided to contribute a small
amount of money to their funds .We also decided to put the Pain and
Palliative charity boxes at different shops within the vicinity of Thrissur.

CONCLUSION
 Most people feel dread when they contemplate their beloved ones
mortality , but reality is Death is inevitable.

More palliative care is needed . It reduces suffering but prolong life too.

The right to die is just one part of better care at the end of life.
