NATIONAL GALLERY OF MODERN ART, NEW DELHI

PROJECT INFORMATION
PLACE – NEW DELHI
YEAR – 1954
SITE AREA – 24,700 SQ MT.
FOOTFALL – 75-100 PEOPLE/DAY

PURPOSE
The principal aims and objectives of the National Gallery of
Modern Art Museum is :
• To acquire, organize, maintain and develop galleries and
preserve works of modern art from 1850s onward for
permanent display.

• To organize special exhibitions not only in its own premises


but in other parts of the country and abroad.

• Also act as education and documentation having specialized


library of books, periodicals, photographs and other audio
visual materials.

• To organize lectures, seminars and conferences, and to


encourage higher studies and research in different fields.
LOCATION

ACCESS
• The access to the site is from Sher Shah Suri Road while travelling towards the India Gate.
• There are two entrances to the site but the one on C-Hexagon Road remains closed due to security reasons.
• As we enter there’s a road that leads up to a drop/pick area which further leads to the Parking.

PARKING
• Just before entering from the gate there’s parking area for the people.
• Parking for special dignitaries and VIP’s who come to attend exhibitions is provided separately inside the art gallery.
LANDSCAPE
Landscaping has been done
beautifully and circulation passages
are crafted from it in order to
connect the buildings.

CIRCULATION
• From the gate to the point where the
Entry to the gallery building begins, is all vehicular as well as
pedestrians.
• Staircases evolved out of straight passages
inorder to connect different blocks.

MATERIALS
• Pink and red sandstone has been used in the Pics showing circulation spaces.

Landscaping
JAIPUR HOUSE
The structure has a butterfly layout and a central dome. The structure is clad
in red and yellow sandstone. Inside, has large spiral staircase leading to the
upper floor. Its now used to hold permanent art exhibitions.
Block 1
It’s a four-level block which consists of permanent gallery on its ground , first
and second floors and cafeteria in the basement.

Block 2
It has a temporary gallery space and display area.

Block 3
Is the house of the administrative and academic offices, auditorium, preview
theatre, conference halls, library, lecture room and museum shop.
PARKING AND ENTRANCE

OBSERVATIONS

1. Site has 4 entry/exit gates

parking space available for people
with disabilities within the
building premises.
5. Parking for visitors is not allowed
inside the campus. Only official

PROPOSAL
1. Separate parking signage to be installed for 4- wheeler and 2-
wheeler parking.
2. Signage for accessible parking should be provided.
3. Entrance to the building has been made accessible by a ramp as
well as by steps.
4. Tactile flooring to be installed properly on the kerb ramp.
5. Entrance to be maintained properly.

ENTRANCE
1. The ramp surface is smooth and non- slippery.
2. Both sides handrails are provided on the
ramp.
3. There are six steps at the entrance, however,
there is no marking on the edge of the steps
for the benefit of people with visual
impairments.
4. There are no handrails at either side of the
steps.

RAMP

OBSERVATIONS

1. There is ramp present inside the new exhibition


building.

height of 3000mm.

at the height of 750mm and 900mm.
4. There are no tactile warning blocks to guide the
visitors with visual impairment.

PROPOSAL
1. Proper directional signage must be installed at all
entrances to guide the visitors towards the ramp.
2. Tactile warning blocks should be placed 400 mm
before the beginning and end of each ramp to
indicate the level change to visually impaired
persons.
