( High Blood Pressure )

BLOOD PRESSURE
• Blood pressure is the
force of blood against the
walls of arteries.
• Blood pressure is
measured in mmHg.
Recorded as two number
:
– the systolic pressure -
as the heart beats,
– the diastolic pressure -
as the heart relaxes
between beats
• A typical normal blood
pressure is 120/80 mmHg
• Greater than 140/90
mmHg is considered high
~ hypertension

Facts about Hypertension

• Hypertension is a condition in which the pressure, that blood


exerts on the walls of blood vessels goes up and stays high,
which can damage the blood vessels, the heart and other
organs.

• 83 of 1000 peoples have hypertension (Indonesia, 1995)

• No identified causes in 90 – 95 percent of people who have it.

• One of the most important risk factor for coronary heart


disease, stroke (3rd), heart failure (1st) and kidney disease.

• Mostly without any symptoms Silent killer


Type of Hypertension

• Primary Hypertension
– Essential Hypertension
– No cause can be found
– 90 – 95 percent

• Secondary Hypertension
– Non essential Hypertension
– A definite cause can be found
– 5 – 10 percent
Causes of Secondary Hypertension

• Renal diseases
• Endocrine disorder, such as:
– Adrenal gland tumor
– Hyperthyroidism
– Hyperparatyroidism
• Pregnancy
• Drugs (birth control pill,
corticosteroids, nasal
decongestants, cocaine)
